[A] I'm just making this up.
[C#]
Alright, so I'm here for a quick R&B guitar lesson, switching between [G] C major 7 and F major 7.
And I want to show you some cool tricks that you can do to [B] spice it up and make it sound
juicy.
You feel me?
[G] Alright, so we're going to start with [C] C major 7.
If you don't know this chord, [D] get ready, you're about to learn it.
So you're going to take your [C] first finger and you're going to bar the 3rd fret of the
A string all the way down.
[Gm] So, it'll sound like that.
[E]
Sorry.
Um, so, [C] [Gm] bam.
Then you're going to take your middle finger [C#] and put it on the 4th fret of the G string.
[G] [C] It'll sound like that.
It ain't going to sound right yet, but just keep going.
Then you put your ring finger [G] on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6th fret of the D string.
Bam.
And then you put your pinky on the 6th fret of the [C] B string.
[G] So that's how you play a major 7 chord.
And it's C major 7 because this note right here is C and it's just the bass note.
So don't worry about the theory and overthinking and all of that.
Just know that this is C major 7.
And if you take this exact shape and you slide it up 1, [E] 2, 3, [B] 4, [Am] 5 frets, [E] you have F major
7, which is the 4th chord in the C major scale.
I am Bernice and me ball, so I'll be right back home.
Don't judge me if it happens to anybody.
Okay, so, [C] um, where was I?
C major 7 [F] to F major 7.
Okay, so [C#] that's something that you've [E] probably heard like so many times.
It's not very difficult.
It's just like the 1 to the 4.
So [Em] you go.
[Am] [Em]
[Am] [Em]
Okay, [E] so I don't even remember, to be honest, what I did in the original video.
But I want to teach the idea of messing around [C] with ways to get from the 1 to the 4.
And you can just kind of memorize some concepts and ideas and play with it.
So [Em] when you have [E] C major 7, you got all your hands [C#] here.
And one of the tricks people do is like a pull off, hammer on pull off, whatever you
[G] want to call it.
Pinky, pinky action is what I call it, like with R&B and soul.
So that's one trick.
[Em]
So instead of just going.
[Am]
[B] I'll just wait while I burn the meatballs.
[Am] [C]
[Am] [C]
[F] [B] You see how I messed up and I played it off?
[F#] I've learned to do that on stage.
So if you make a mistake, just repeat it.
Anyways, so you [G] got this.
Bam.
So you're taking your pinky and you're lifting it up.
[Em]
[G] [C] [Am]
Okay, so [D#] you're just kind of like hammering on to the [Em] note that's right below your pinky.
Okay, [Am] [E]
[Em] if you see you can kind of do that in here again.
[Am]
[G]
[Am]
[G] [Em]
[G]
[Em]
[B] You just kind of make up your own style, your own lick, your own vibe.
But the idea is that you're messing with the pinky, okay, which is here.
And you just kind of, excuse me, you just kind of lifting [G] it up.
[E] Lifting it up from this string, from the B string to the E string.
Okay, so I'm going to zoom in on my hand.
[B]
[G]
[Em]
[Am] [F]
[G] Alright, so [N] what I'm doing is literally, every time I do it, I know I'm doing it differently.
But I'm doing that on purpose to show you guys that I'm not trying to plan something
or memorize a specific lick to do.
I'm more so taking a concept, an idea, and messing with it in the moment.
And to me, that's much more valuable because there's been so many times that I'm in a situation,
like on stage or at a gig, to where people record and stuff like that.
I used to memorize licks.
And then when people started recording me and posting it online,
I was like, I've been playing that same lick for two years.
So the idea was that I tried to stop, I'm burning the mules.
I tried to stop just memorizing licks and memorizing things and start really paying attention
to the concepts and the ideas that I was playing and trying to mess with that
and be more creative and free.
Because in my opinion, that's real music.
And that's how you make real music.
To me, music is not just memorizing licks and then regurgitating them whenever you think of it.
But it's actually taking things you've learned and putting it in cool spots,
experimenting with it, exploring with it.
So again, I'm going to take my guitar again, and I'm going to take that same idea and play with it,
hopefully to give you guys some more ideas.
But take it, use it, and make it your own.
[E]
[G] [Em]
[Am] [Em]
[Am] [G]
[Am] [G] [F#]
So that's pretty much it.
It's very [A] simple.
Most of you probably already knew that.
But if you didn't, mess with it.
And even if you already knew it, see if you can come up with new things.
There's nothing new under the sun, obviously.
[B] But to me, the cool part about being a musician and being an artist is taking things that have been done
and used for years and years and years and finding my own way to reincorporate it
in the things that I'm doing.
I hope you guys liked that lesson, and I will see you soon.
