You know, Rodney Foster has been a part of our show from the [C] very first session of Musicians We Feature.
[A] We're big [G] fans and you should be one too.
His 2014 album called Everything I Should Have Said is [C] highlighted by the semi-biographical song California.
Here's his story behind that tune.
[D] I had never written a song about California.
It's [G] odd that here I am on a Texas music thing [D] doing a song about California.
It's about two sort of broken people who are looking to [Em] start over and [E] they meet by happenstance.
[D] My wife is from the [A] Bay Area in California and we were [E] out there visiting [F#m] family and
friends with our kids [G] and it was sunset [G] and you could see the lights of San [A] Francisco coming on.
We [D] got to talking about her folks and how her dad had [Em] come home from World War II in
the Pacific and [A] said, I ain't going back to the [E] farm in Pennsylvania.
I'm staying right [Em] here.
And her [A] mom had come out on a train in the [F#m] 50s to [Em] just start a new [D] life.
They met on [A] the beach in Alameda.
So [F#m] she just said, yeah, it goes back even to the Dust Bowl days, you know, [G] or the gold rush.
She [A] said, everybody came to California to kind of start over.
It's the sort of nature of the whole [D] place.
And I was like, hey baby, can you hang on a [Bm] minute because I [B] got to go get a piece of
paper and [G] write that down.
[A] So now that's my third state.
I [D] have Texas in 1880, Louisiana blue, and now a song called [D#] California.
Who knows, maybe I'll get to the other 47 before it's over with.

Yes, [E] morning came [D] too soon on [Bm] the way to [A]
California.
Can't [D] you hear [Bm]
California calling [A] your name?
A [D]
siren's song [Bm] once you hear it.
Nothing is [A] the same.
[E] Made ancient [F#m] Spaniards sail.
[E] Made Guthrie ride [D] the rail.
[Bm] Oh,
[A] California,
[E]
[A] that highway to freedom.
[E] Came a sweet lost weekend for [F#m] me and you.
[A] A detour through the mountains [E] up to Santa Fe with nothing much to [F#m] do.
[D] You said you're starting over [Bm] in LA.
Now that he's cut [A] you loose, I'm headed north [F#m] of there.
I don't [E] know why she left [D] that away.
I might land in [Bm] Santa Cruz, [A]
California.
[D] Can't you hear [Bm]
California calling [A] your name?
A [D] siren's song once you [Bm]
hear it.
Nothing is [A] the same.
[E] Called Marilyn [F#m] Monroe.
Made miners rush [D]
gold.
[Bm]
[A] Oh, California, [Bm] I know the year is come and gone.
[C#m] And that [A] you've probably moved on.
[Bm] But girl, your memory won't go [E] away.
[D] You know that this sounds crazy wrong.
[A] But if you hear this song, [Bm] October 1st,
Meet me in [E] Morro Bay.
[D] Can't you hear
[Bm] California calling [A]
your name?
A [D] siren's song [Bm] once you hear it.
Nothing is [A] the same.
[E] She's whispering [F#m] soft and low.
[E] Come and [D] hold me close.
