Going [Em] out there in the [Eb] woods and [G] fetch [Dm] me another old cat [Gm] lover of all.
[N] [E] Thank [N] you very much.
Over in Europe, since I broke the ballot, took it to the child member to name drop.
I was over in Europe [A] running around with a guy named Slade Cleese one [Bb] time.
And Slade's got this [E] great album out.
It's called Broke Dennis.
And Slade's got this song on there called Give Me One Good Year.
And Slade was explaining how he came to write this [C] song.
We were sitting there on [Bbm] stage, no [Em] swapping songs and everything.
And all of a sudden he was explaining how he wrote this song.
He said he was [G] going through a really bad period in [Bb] his life.
A really horrible dark [E] period that things [Ebm] were so bad [N] that in desperation as a last hope,
he fell down on his knees and threw out this prayer, Give Me One Good Year.
And [Bb] he took that prayer and he put it into this beautiful melody.
[Em] And then he wrote these lyrics [A] with a lot of depth and weight.
And then he sang the song.
And [E] after he explained how he wrote it and sang the song, I was so moved by that,
I said, that's something I should do.
I should [Bb] take a prayer and write a song.
[Em] Until I realized the only prayer I know is, God, if you get me out of [Bbm] this,
I promise I'll never do it again.
[E] [Bb] I can't believe it.
I'm a great believer.
[Em] It's a very powerful, [E] mysterious force.
The great thing about that prayer [Bb] is it's worked four times.
[Em] Fifth time there are no lawyers [E] involved.
I [Am] grew [Em] up here in Old Cleveland and [Bb] everything.
When [Ab] I was [A] 18, 19 years old, I wasn't a very nice guy.
What happened was, around about [E] 20, 21, I got busted for writing [A] some hot checks.
[Bbm] I [Am] was in a lot of trouble.
So I didn't know what [Bb] to do.
So this buddy of mine, he said, [Gb] you need to go talk to a spiritual advisor.
You need to go talk to [Eb] a reverend or a preacher.
I didn't know what to do.
So I went and talked to this preacher guy.
I told him to explain what [N] was going on.
I said, I got these hot checks.
He said, well, turn [E]
it over to God.
I [Bb] said, well, okay, that sounds like a good deal.
[Eb] So I [Ab] turned it over to God.
God, of course, turned it [F] over to the [Eb] district attorney.
[Bb]
[G] I'd like to [Eb] preface this [F] song with a [Bb] quote that I [E] believe is attributed to Woody Guthrie.
He said, [N] it's a folk singer's job, even if he's got a rhythm section,
to comfort disturbed people, to [F] disturb comfortable [Eb] people.
[G]
[E] [G] And I think that's what Woody Guthrie is.
