Here's the thing, the thing is that the inspiration for this particular tune actually came back when I was in high school.
And I want to tell you a little quick story here.
See, here's what happened.
See, I started taking guitar lessons back in Chicago, Illinois when I was about 11 years old, right?
So, here I'd be, every Saturday morning I'd get up, take my little guitar, put it in my little guitar case and head off to guitar school, man, to take my guitar lessons.
And it was awesome.
All I could think about was music and learning how to play that guitar, right?
Minded my own business, never paid attention to anyone.
And this went on for a couple of months until one day, Saturday morning, came along, put my little guitar in my little guitar case, headed off to music school.
All of a sudden, this car pulls up alongside me, doors fly open, bunch of guys jump out of the car, chase me down the street, into the alley, knock me down, kick my butt, take [C#] my guitar,
slap it in the garbage can, put the top [B] on and leave me there feeling humiliated, heartbroken [C] and otherwise, upset.
[N] A little sympathy, please.
I was 11 years old, folks.
Now, I'll tell you something, I just figured that this was an isolated occurrence, you know, no big deal.
So, next Saturday, same thing, put my little guitar in my little guitar case, headed off to guitar school.
Same car pulls up, doors fly open, guys jump out of the car, chase me down the street, into the alley, kick my butt, take my guitar, slap it in the garbage can and leave me there feeling bad once again.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, I'm starting to get a little bit pissed.
I'm thinking to [B] myself, you know, I mind my own business, [E] I'm not doing anything [C#] to bother anybody, it must be that guitar that's making these guys kind of [N] angry, right?
So, you know, I take my lumps because I love that guitar, people, and there was nothing anybody could do to me that was going to stop me from learning how to play it.
That was my dream, people, that was my ticket to salvation, you understand?
So, I'm getting to the end of the [F] story, hang with me for just a second.
So now, [N] you got to fast forward a few years till I'm in high school, right?
And by this time, the Beatles had come out and suddenly the guitar was kind of a cool thing to have around, right?
All the girls kind of liked the guys who knew how to play guitar, and guess who, the only guy in my neighborhood who had been taking guitar lessons for the past six years was?
Thank you.
Thank you very much, you know?
So, now, suddenly, I turn into, from the geek of the neighborhood to like the coolest dude in town.
We're standing here at the high school dance, all these guys who used to kick my butt are now hanging around close to me because that's where the girls are coming, right?
So, here I am, standing at the high school dance, these beautiful little blonde haired, blue eyed girls come walking across the gymnasium toward me, and it's a ladies choice, so she's going to pick whichever boy she wants at this whole dance, to dance with her at this particular time.
And all these guys who have been kicking my butt for years are kind of standing around, trying to figure out which one of them she's going to ask to dance, right?
Well, I'll tell you what, she walked right up to me, and for the sake of the youngsters in the crowd, let's just say, she whispered right in my ear, and she asked me to do a little bit more than dance.
