_ _ _ _ [D] Come [Am] and let's go back [G] on a journey. _ _
The year was _ _ 1963.
_ [F] _ The [G] place was Nutley, New [C] Jersey,
_ in the First Baptist [G] Church where I [C] pastored.
_ And gathered there that [A] evening was
James [G] Cleveland, the Angelic Choir.
And I recall [E] going to my pulpit [G] _ and [F] giving the folks
a little [G] spiritual advice before [C] we sang.
I said, when you get home, get your Bible.
_ [Dm]
[C] Read Mark, the fourth [Am] chapter, [E] starting at the [G] 37th verse,
going down to the 41st verse.
[F]
And in the [G] context of these [C] verses,
you will find a story of Jesus [F] _ [Dm] and his [C] disciples
as they commanded a boat [Dbm] [D] and went out on the Sea of [G] Galilee.
_ Jesus got tired and [Gm] went down in the [G] hinder part of the ship
[F] and went [G] to sleep. _
[C] But while Jesus slept, [G] the cosmic [C] phenomenals
of the world broke loose.
[A] The sky [D] got as black [G] as a thousand midnights
down in a cypress [D] swamp.
[G] The thunders [F] rolled across the heavens.
[G] The [C] lightning wrote a zigzag name
on the bosom of [F] the clouds.
[C] And the waters tossed and [E] turned that little ship.
[G] And these men who thought they knew so much about the sea,
[F] _ decided [G] we better [C] go get Jesus. _ _
_ [Dm] _ And they went [C] down and they shook Jesus.
[Am] _
And Jesus [G] got up, came up, stood on the ship, _
looked [F] around _ [G] and _ [C] chastised them first by saying,
oh [F] ye _ [C] of little faith, _ [Am] what are you so [G] concerned about?
And he raised his hand and said three [Am] words, _
[G] peace, _ [C] _ be _ _ [F] still. _
[C] The sun _ came [A] out, [Am] _ the [G] clouds dissipated.
_ _ _ The thunder _ hushed [Am] his voice.
[G] The winds went back in [C] his chambers and slammed [Dm] the doors. _
[C] The waters laid down [D] like a baby
and said, [G] we're gonna hold you so you don't rock [Am] no more.
[G] Aren't we [Am] like that?
As [G] long as we think [C] we can handle our ship,
we don't [F] call on Jesus.
[C] But when the going get [Am] rough, [D] when things get [G] tough,
we call on Jesus.
And when they [Am] woke him up, somebody said,

This is what they said.
[F] These are the words when they [C] woke my savior.
They said this, what? _ _
