[G] [C]
[D] Come [Am] and let's go back [G] on a journey.
The year was 1963.
[F] The [G] place was Nutley, New [C] Jersey,
in the First Baptist [G] Church where I [C] pastored.
And gathered there that [A] evening was
James [G] Cleveland, the Angelic Choir.
And I recall [E] going to my pulpit [G] and [F] giving the folks
a little [G] spiritual advice before [C] we sang.
I said, when you get home, get your Bible.
[Dm]
[C] Read Mark, the fourth [Am] chapter, [E] starting at the [G] 37th verse,
going down to the 41st verse.
[F]
And in the [G] context of these [C] verses,
you will find a story of Jesus [F] [Dm] and his [C] disciples
as they commanded a boat [Dbm] [D] and went out on the Sea of [G] Galilee.
Jesus got tired and [Gm] went down in the [G] hinder part of the ship
[F] and went [G] to sleep.
[C] But while Jesus slept, [G] the cosmic [C] phenomenals
of the world broke loose.
[A] The sky [D] got as black [G] as a thousand midnights
down in a cypress [D] swamp.
[G] The thunders [F] rolled across the heavens.
[G] The [C] lightning wrote a zigzag name
on the bosom of [F] the clouds.
[C] And the waters tossed and [E] turned that little ship.
[G] And these men who thought they knew so much about the sea,
[F] decided [G] we better [C] go get Jesus.
[Dm] And they went [C] down and they shook Jesus.
[Am]
And Jesus [G] got up, came up, stood on the ship,
looked [F] around [G] and [C] chastised them first by saying,
oh [F] ye [C] of little faith, [Am] what are you so [G] concerned about?
And he raised his hand and said three [Am] words,
[G] peace, [C] be [F] still.
[C] The sun came [A] out, [Am] the [G] clouds dissipated.
The thunder hushed [Am] his voice.
[G] The winds went back in [C] his chambers and slammed [Dm] the doors.
[C] The waters laid down [D] like a baby
and said, [G] we're gonna hold you so you don't rock [Am] no more.
[G] Aren't we [Am] like that?
As [G] long as we think [C] we can handle our ship,
we don't [F] call on Jesus.
[C] But when the going get [Am] rough, [D] when things get [G] tough,
we call on Jesus.
And when they [Am] woke him up, somebody said,
[Am] Reverend Roberts, [G] what did they [C] say?
This is what they said.
[F] These are the words when they [C] woke my savior.
They said this, what?
Master.
The [Bb]
[C] [F]
tempest is raging.
[G] [F]
[D] [Gb] Oh, [G] the [Gm]
billows [Am] [G] are
[F] [G] [Dm]
[C] tossing high.
[F] [C] Oh yes.
[G] Mm [C]-hmm, the sky
[D] [C] is all [Bb] [C] shattered.
[F] Oh, with blackness.
Oh, the heart [D]
[G] now shatters.
Oh, [F] hey, [G]
[C] ooh, it's [F] night.
But [C] honey, this is the point, listen, listen.
[D] [E] Sure
[F] [E]
that [Gb] not [E]
[Am] that we'd be
[E] [Am]
okay
[B] [G]
[Em] [D]
asleep.
[C] [D]
[G]
[Am] [G]
[C] When it seemed like each [G] moment [C]
is so [Bb] [C] madly [F]
threatening.
Oh yeah, somebody [D] know what they said.
[G] Oh great, oh great.
Oh, [F] [G]
[C] indeed.
[A] Yeah, yeah, Lord.
Yeah, [Bm] Jesus.
[C]
The way.
Carol and help.
[E] [G]
Obey my will.
Peace be still.
Peace [D] be [G] still.
Peace be [Dm] still.
[C]
Oh, peace be [F] still.
[C]
[G] Oh, where the [C] grass.
Where the grass.
The storm.
[G]
Oh, [Bb] see.
[G]
[Am] Oh, indeed.

Yes he [G] will.
Yes he will.
Yes [E] he will.
Late in the midnight [Am] hour.
Late in the midnight hour.
Early [F] in the morning.
[E] Early in the morning.
When it is a little [D] late.

There'll be peace on your job.

Give you [F] a troubling mind.

If you don't have peace [E] of mind.
Oh, he [F] will.
If you get [G] confused.
He'll be [E] there.
You can trust in [Am] the Lord.
[Dm] Leaning on to your [E] own understanding.
[D] Yes he will.
He [E]
