Rich Mullins - Verge of a Miracle — Light Music, 1987 chords
Start Jamming...
A clunding ball that was hung in the sky
[Fm] Hurled into orbit, [Bb]
there [Ab] [Gb] you are
[Db] Whether you fall down or whether you lie
[Fm] Seems you'll [Bb] never get [Ab] too [Gb] far
[Ab]
Someone's [Db] waiting to put a weight
[Gb]
[Gb] Upon your [Ab] blightless
[Ebm] heart
[Db] You're on the verge [Gb] of a miracle
[B] Just standing [Bbm] there
[Db] You're on the verge of [Gb] a miracle
[B] Just waiting to be [Ebm] believed in
[Db] Open your eyes [Gb] and see
[Ab] You're on the verge of a miracle
Here in your room where nobody can see
[Fm] Your voice is all out [Bb] but [Ab] self [Gb]-aware
[Db] The deep confusion that's running so deep
[Fm] There is a promise [Bb] you [Ab] must [Gb] keep
[Ab]
Love that [Db] seems so far [Gb] away
[Db] Is [Gb] standing there [Ab] in [Ebm] need
[Db] You're on the verge of a [Gb] miracle
[B] Just standing [Ebm] there
[Db] You're on the verge of a miracle
Just [B] waiting to be [Ebm]
believed in
Open your eyes [Gb] and see
[Ab]
[Ebm] And now [Db] you've laid out your last [Gb] chance
And [Ab] your directions have [Ebm] all been lost
And the roads that [Db] you're looking down are all they [Gb] did
Look up, you can [Fm] see your future, look up
[Db] You're on the verge [Gb] of a miracle
[B] Just standing [Ebm] there
[Db] You're on the verge of [Gb] a miracle
[B] Just waiting to [Ebm] be believed [Db] in
Open your [Eb] eyes and see
[Ab] You're on the verge of a miracle
[Db]
[Ab] That's a really beautiful song.
I really like that.
Is there a story behind that?
You didn't just write that?
Yeah, we got into the studio and started the album
and I didn't have [N] enough songs really
and so I started writing this one
and I got this [Eb] far
[Fm] [Bbm]
[B] and I knew what I was going to do
but I couldn't come up with any lyrics
and I was really worried about writing a really good song
because they [B] wanted me to have something they could play on the radio
so I [Ab] was working real hard to come up with that
[Gb] and I couldn't
[F] so I went to a retreat with the church
[G] and talked to a kid there who had attempted to commit suicide
this is after I worked on this for over a month
[N] and after I talked to him I [G] knew exactly what the song was about
and [N] it was very easy at that point
How do you go about writing a song?
[Ab] Do you get [C] a
like that?
[E] Yeah, I bang at the piano [N] until you accidentally come across something that sounds good
So you go from the music first to the words?
Pretty much, yeah
[A] I [Gb] normally start with the accompaniment
[B] I just play until I hit something that sounds [Bb] nice
and then I just repeat it over and over
which [Gb] makes it kind of pop-like music
Well then when somebody [B] else records your songs
does [Ab] the accompaniment ever get lost?
Yeah
[Db] Are there any songs [G] that we would know that you've done that you can't stand?
I probably want to put you on the spot like [B] that
I [N] can't stand?
No, I like everything I ever wrote
No, I meant that other people did
you can't stand the way they did it
Well I think sometimes
I more [Bb] tend to appreciate people who don't synth it out
[Gb] The too much synthesizer just kills [Gb] it I think
You told me you don't like Technopop at all
[Eb] I hate Technopop
[Bm] Okay
[Bb] Why don't we go to a song that you did for Amy [G] Grant
Okay
Before [Ab] we do that
There you are, you're a songwriter
How in the world did you get Amy Grant to do
The first one you said was Sing Your [B] Praise to the Lord
Is that the song, the first one you did?
How in the world did you come up
Did you [A] walk up to Amy Grant and say
[E] Hi, here's a song for you
How did that happen?
No, I was working in a retreat ministry at the time
And part of the retreat ministry
There was [B] a group of us [Bb] that sang during the [Ab] retreats
And we provided the entertainment
[Gb] And [B] so we made a custom album
Just to sell to people [Abm] on the retreats
To help support the ministry
And Sing Your Praise was the first song on the album
[Am]
And [E] a girl went to some kind of conference in Nashville
And she stayed with a [Ab] girl who goes to Belmont
Who knew [Gb] someone, who knew someone, who knew someone, who knew someone
And so I didn't even know who Amy Grant was
I was very snotty about it
[N] They called and I think Mike Blanton is the one
Yeah, Mike Blanton called
[Bb] And said that Amy Grant wanted to [Gb] record it
And I said, well that's wonderful, you know Fine
[Bb] And he asked me if it was copyright
And I [Ab] said, oh no
[Am] I don't suppose [N] it is
But I did write it and you know
But you can do it, it's no big deal
And then he tried to impress me with who Amy was
And it made me angry, [Gb] I thought
You know
[Bb] I mean, I'm not really all that impressed
I was a lot more impressed when I met [Gb] her
She's very nice
She's always been very pretty
Did you like the way that she did the song?
Oh, I loved it, yeah
Was it weird walking into a record store
And seeing this [N] million seller album with your song on it?
Did it sell a million?
It sold a lot of records, didn't it?
Didn't H.D. sell a million?
Something like that
I don't know how many it sold Lots, anyway Yeah
Well, it's fun
But I feel removed from that
I mean, what I like [B] is writing
And I kind of like performing
Although [Ab] I don't like singing too much
Because, especially when I have a sore throat
It just hurts
It adds like a depth to your voice
[G] Let's do Love [Gbm] of Another Kind
You didn't [A] write that by yourself
You wrote that with No, with
[Bb] Mostly with Wayne Kirkpatrick
I don't know, I don't know what he wrote
Wayne Kirkpatrick is the guy who [Ab] wrote, you know
Lyrics on every one of Michael Smith's last albums
He's quite a genius writer
How did you get hooked up with him?
We wrote for the same publishing company for a while
[B] And he came in one day
As a matter of fact, he came in one day
And we [Ab] decided to take off for Michigan that night
[N] It was fun
And we started writing then
And we continued writing
We wrote a couple of songs together on my last album
Okay, this is from UnGuarded, right?
[Ab] Yeah, this is the original version
Original version, before Amy got a hold of it
Didn't make it to the record,
