This album is called honoring the fathers of bluegrass 1946 and 47 a lot of the new young kids don't know a lot about
Bill Monroe Lester flat Earl Scruggs chubby wise and Howard watts the guys that really started bluegrass music right here on this stage in
1946 so I always feel like it's important to honor the fathers the first time I met
Bill Monroe I was six years old up in Martha, Kentucky.
He came to a real close to our hometown and
The audience kept requesting let little Ricky Skaggs get up and sing and so finally he did and I got up and got to sing
one and then the next year I was living here in Goodlitsville and
We met Earl Scruggs right backstage here me and my dad and he heard me play Earl did and
He asked me to come down for an audition for their television show
And I made the audition and got to be on Flatt & Scruggs television show when I was 7 that was way cool right there
That was awesome.
Let's hear it for Ricky Skaggs everybody in Kentucky
Well [Bb] [F]
one of the [C] coolest things about
Getting to play the Opry and actually doing this old music that we have recorded
Is just the fact that so much of it was heard [N] in
America right here from this stage and God bless am 650 WSM
Because they were the ones really that blasted this music out in 1946 and 47 when it first got started so
It's it's a wonderful thing.
So I hope hope you like this song.
This is a [F] song that my mother
This was her favorite song and I always do it in her memory.
This is called mother's only sleeping
Mother's not dead
She's only [C] asleep
Just patiently waiting
For Jesus [F] to come
The birds will be singing
While mother [C] lies sleeping
They will sing
Over as the grapes [F] into away I left my home
Way [Dm] back in [C] the mountain since mother and father
Had both [F] passed away
We followed our mother
Up [C] to the graveyard
For mother was gone
To heaven [F] that day
Mother's not dead
She's [C] only asleep
Just patiently waiting
For Jesus [F] to come the birds will be saying
While mother lies [C] sleeping
They will sing
Over as the grapes [F] it's away.
[C]
[F]
Oh how we miss
Around the [C] old home play
Everything seems so long
Oh since she went [F] away
Mother is sleeping
Way back in [C] the mountain his mother is sleeping
Way back in [F] the hill mother's not dead
She's only [C] asleep
Just patiently waiting
Waiting for Jesus [F] to come the birds will be singing
While mother [C] lies sleeping they will sing
As the grave sinks away
[F] Thank [N] you
