[G#m]
[C#m]
[B] [F#]
We scan the [G#m] empty sky
[E] [B]
[D#m] Rise against [D#] making acoustic record
Something that kind of [E] just came up this year as we
[B] We finished the wolves record
We had been [C#] on the road.
We're still on the road
Touring wolves right [B] now, and we were trying to [F#] think of a way to get back in the studio to create [E] something
Whether that was like new [C#] songs or cover songs [B] and then the idea got brought up
Like what about some sort of reinvention [F#m] of the older [B] songs?
[F#] Getting these together and like an acoustic format was [B] for me
it was difficult [Bm] because my first [F#] my first [E] approach of
Attacking any song is to try to bring out melodies on the [D#] bass that are complementing everything else
But this I found less is [D#m] more it's all [C#] about Tim with his guitar
[F#] [G#m] That's the real [B] process is like what can we [D#m] do to this what can how can we [D#m] reimagine this?
So we're not just playing the [G#] exact song on acoustic guitars
[G#] You know rise it against is not characteristically an [E] acoustic band [A] so
We're really good at like
[E] like
Leaping [A] first and looking later.
You know I mean, we're just kind of like yeah, [C#m] let's do it
[E]
And then we got here more like wait, what are we doing and can we do this and is this a good [A] idea?
[G]
[F#] I
mean so many songs we haven't touched [C#] for 10 years and so [F#] it's
[F] I think an [D#] opportunity for [F] us to have fun with the [E] songs and
For our fans to [D#] get a little different take on some of their favorite [F#]
trying to unpack all these songs has been interesting
Do a stripped-down version of it sheds like a spotlight on the song a little bit more
[A#]
I think we've been [B] like
Like comfortable enough [F#] to get really irreverent with them
You know and just [D#] decide like [G#m] [D#m] I don't care what's on the record.
[B] This is the way it should go
[G#] It's all just extraneous on top of acoustic it might be
I kind of felt it like at that time
Let go of the idea of trying to mimic them exactly and so what if we got a different instrument to [C#] replace that part?
[F#] We have all [C#] these other instruments at our [A#m] disposal that we don't [C#] play or have been I've even thought about
[D#] And we have other musicians that can play violins and [B] violas and you know [E] whatever
Upright [D#m] basses and stuff so let's use [G#] that to our advantage and see what we can [D#m] come up with but that's the challenge really is
Just kind of trying to reimagine your [G#] band and pretend you're in a different band with these songs
[E] [A] [F#]
[E] [D] It was fun.
I played the drums today on [E] some of these and
just had like a big old like Ludwig kick drum that looks like it's from like the [D#] 20s and
[F] brushes and like a snare drum
and it was just kind of fun to reinvent the drum parts and
[D#] Try to [C] you know just rethink what drums go along with [D#] strings and an acoustic guitar
[C] On a [E] song that normally has like heavy you know play as hard [D#] as you can
Drums and like softer vocals [D#m] so that was [E] fun
[B]
[N]
[A#]
[G#]
[C] Little decisions we made in the album version
[G#]
While we were playing them didn't serve the acoustic part, [F#] then we just we just
I [F#] don't know what to do.
It's nothing.
[B] It could be nothing.
It's probably nothing
[G#]
[F#] We were trying to be [D#] real finicky and get every single
Picking pattern and drum part and bass run or vocal thing all in there because we realized like
If you try to jam all [C#] those things on acoustic song
You're not really doing the song justice
[D#] So I got you know I'm playing on like the choruses of songs and leaving you know ducking out in the verses or
But yeah, it was hard like like to [A] know when to like basically [Gm] shut up
[B] You know and [F#] lay back you know
[B]
[F#] Well all the pieces are falling in place really naturally it was like [C#] okay.
This was a good idea
[D#m] This was [F#] a good instinct, and [C#] these aren't just like [D#m] bonus tracks.
[F#] I mean to me like this is like [C#] [D#m] a
This will be like [F#] a part of the rise against [C#] story here are the songs that we care about
That made us who we are
[A] [F#] There are songs that are that are on our [E] first record songs that are on most recent [F#m] record
And [F#] I think it'll be you know part of our story just another chapter
