Robben Ford Guitar Lesson - Earthquake (Workshop) - TrueFire chords
Start Jamming...
Okay, let me play this thing for you.
The one before it is called Earthquake.
I refer to this as kind of a black [B] comedy.
Some people don't realize I mean this somewhat tongue-in-cheek, Earthquake.
[E]
And it's just a bunch of seventh chords.
[E] It begins with 13th chords, but again, that's just a seventh chord with a 13th in it, right?
So the song starts like this.
The first bar is that one, two, no.
[A] Second [Am] state, [A]
[B] [C]
[A]
[D] letter [Em] A,
[A] A7.
[G] I've traveled miles [Em] to [Dm] find [Em] you waiting,
[D] waiting [Bbm] for someone [Dm] I've never [D] been.
[Am]
[A]
[Em] Angry eyes,
[Dm] hooks [Em] and baitings,
[C] and [Eb] accusations of drinking [D]
[Am] gin.
[F]
Who could [G]
stand against these [A]
odds?
You notice my voicing, chord voicing, is [F] not even changing.
Who [G] could stand against [A] these odds?
[Bbm] No one [Am] I know could [Ab]
win, place, [G] or show [Fm] [E] against you.
[Fm] [Am]
[C] [A]
[Bb] [Eb] [C]
[A]
[C] [D] [E] [G]
[A] [Em] Dishes are done, after a big solo.
[F] [Gm] The TV [Em] chatters,
[C] words [Bbm] still banging inside my [Am] head.
[A] Wait for [Em] the sun to
[Dm] further [E] matters.
[Em] [D]
My buttons [Bbm] are pushed, and I just see [Am]
red.
[Bm]
[Dm]
You're [G] the taker of the [A]
cake.
[Bb] The one who fools [Am] does make.
[Ab] My own [G] private LA [F] [E] earthquake.
[B] [Am]
[C]
[A]
[B] [C]
[A]
[C] [Dm] [Em] [A]
[Em] That's basically the song.
It's [D] just a bunch of seventh chords, you know.
[A]
[G] A7, G7, [F]
F7, [G] E minor 7, [D]
D minor [G] 7, E flat 7, D7.
[G] So the only chords that aren't just straight up seventh chords
are the E [D] minor and D minor.
You know, [F] [G] F, [A] G, A flat, [Bb] B flat, A.
[Ab]
[G] [F] [E]
[Em]
So I was proud of this song.
This is one of those things.
It's like it started, you know, I just kind of had [G] this.
[Bb]
[Am] I came up with this thing.
[A]
[B]
[C]
[Am] [A]
[Dm]
[Em] [D] [A]
That's basically from a Miles Davis record.
[Em] I just heard a bass player play something kind of [B] like that.
I just always liked that.
So I copped it.
So dig, this [Bb] thing.
[E] La, [A] da, da, [Gbm] la, [Fm] la, la, [B] la, [C] la, la, la.
That's very deliberate, you know.
It's [G] virtually [Ab] the same chords.
[Bb] But [E]
[A] the chord [Gb] voicings, you know, give it a melody.
[A] La, da, da, la, [Bb] la, la, la, [C] la, la.
It's got a lift to it, right?
It keeps going up.
So [Em] a little more tension because of that, right?
I'm playing seventh chords.
[G]
[Dm] [E]
[A] And I only have seventh chords written on here.
[Em] G7, but I'm playing G13,
[Dm] F13.
[Em] I like that.
Just that release from these [G] hard chords.
[A] [Em]
[Dm]
To find you [E] [Em] waiting.
To me, just a whole different mood right [D] there, you know.
La, [Bbm] da, da, da, do, do, da, [Am] da, da.
[A] [Em]
Angry eyes, [Dm]
[Em] hooks and baiting,
[D] and [Bbm]
accusations [D] of Drake and Jim.
[Dm] Who [G] could stand [A] against these odds?
[Bbm] No [Bb] one [Am] I know.
I really like that too.
[Bb] Giving myself all kinds of pats on the [Am] back here.
[A] [Bbm]
La, [Am] da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
I had never heard that before, you know.
[Ab]
Da, da, da, [G] da, da, da, [E] da, da.
[Am] Big band, you know.
[A] I think [Gb] like that a lot.
It's one of the reasons I [B] use the [C] treble pickup.
[A]
It's [Ab] brassy to me, you know.
Ba, da, da, you know.
I used to be afraid to kind of hit chords like this loud.
Because, you know, through the wrong amplifier, they distort.
They don't sound good, you know.
A 13, [Gbm] these kind of chords.
But [G] after I finally got the Dumble amplifier,
since then I've learned to be able to do it with other amps
[Em]
to relatively the same effect.
But when I had an amp that could take it, you know,
like really hitting a pretty chord [Gm] or a sophisticated chord
and not distort, to me it just sounds like a big band.
And that's basically what I was going for anyway, you know.
So [G] when you play, you know, you can have these [Ab] concepts
of what it is you're trying to deliver, you know.
[G] You want to affect things in a certain way.
Again, you know, with relatively minimal information,
you can affect things, you
