[N]
I'd like to talk to you about [Bb] chords [B] now.
Chords are everything to [A] me.
I mean, chords open up the world of [G] music.
Chords are [Dbm] what songs are made of.
If you don't know [C] chords, you can't play [B] songs.
If you know [E] chords, you can play anything.
[D] And learning chords naturally [B] develops your ear, because you're listening to the chords, you're hearing the notes.
And [C]
where they [Bb] exist within, [C] which degree of the scale [B] exists within the chord itself.
[Bb] The ninth is on the top, or it's on the bottom, or in [B] the middle.
And your [C] ear starts [B] learning to [A] hear these [D] things without having [Bb] to even [B] see them.
So, it's just a world of musical [Bb] understanding.
[D]
So, [E] for me, [D] everything bumped [B] up [Ab] exponentially [B] [Bb] when I [G] learned [A] chords.
Having gotten a [Bb] book, learned chords out of a book, I myself have since made my own book, [Bm] demonstrating how I use these chords in my [Db] playing.
And [B]
the way I did it was basically finding chord voicings again in a book, [Eb] and taking them and using them on my own gig.
I was actually playing with Charlie Musselwhite [A] at the time.
I was [C] 19 years old.
It was [B] Chicago blues, and I was learning all [Eb] these sophisticated jazz chords, which fit very nicely into the Chicago blues.
[C] So, I would learn these chords and take them [E] to the gig with Charlie, and [Dm]
use them on the gig.
And it was [Dbm] a great way to get [A] these things under my fingers.
I was actually [C] using them as I was learning [Ab] them.
That's [G] very important also.
[Ab] If [C] you're playing with other people, [A] it's in the moment [C] that you have to come up with the goods.
[A] So, there's that [Dbm] extra bump [G] to encourage you to [C] learn more, learn faster.
[B]
So, it was a great way to learn how to play [C] and use jazz chord [Bm] voicings [Bb] without having to play standards.
Stella by Starlight, or any number of, you know, Green Dolphin Street, or any [B] number of standards that generally where [A] you find these chord voicings used.
[B] But having learned it through the [Bm] blues, I could actually play [C] standards, you know.
It [Dbm] took me into being able to [A] play standards by using it in the [F] blues format.
[B] So, this is really, in my opinion, number one.
It's the most important thing to learn after you start getting your fingers going, just playing the instrument.
You want to learn chords.
