[G]
[D] Heyo, my [Abm] name's Adam Marzamer and in this video [N] I'm going to show you the scales used in country music.
So scales used [Ab] in country music.
Obviously country is quite a broad genre so you can
There is a huge range of scales that you can use in country music depending [E] on what sort of flavor you're going for.
But [G]
I [D] found
[Gb] within [G] most of the [Gb] playing that you do in country and [F] most of the playing [Gb] that I do in [E] particular
it usually boils down to two main scales that I'd use.
I'd use the [Gb] country pentatonic scale and [E] the blues scale.
[F]
[Gb] So we'll start with the country pentatonic and that is essentially a major pentatonic with an added flat third.
Okay, so if [Ab] we're in [C] C for example our [Em] major pentatonic is
[D]
[G] [C]
Yeah, so that's the root, [D] the second, [E] the third, [G] the fifth,
the [Am] sixth [G] and the root [C] again.
In C that would [A] be C, D, [E] E, [Em] G, [A]
A [C] and C.
[D] [Am] [C] [G] I always remember the [Gb] major pentatonic
from [E] the
I think it's OJ's [C] tune, my going.
[E]
[C] [E] [C]
But the country pentatonic is exactly that with an added flat third.
So
[Eb]
that's the flat third there.
[D] [C]
The rest of the [Gm] scale is exactly [C] the same as the major pentatonic and
[E] I always recognize this sound from that [Gb] really cheesy country lick, the [C] bluegrass lick.
I'm sure you've all heard that one [E] before.
[C] [Bb] That is [A] exactly the country pentatonic.
[C] So obviously there are hundreds of licks just floating around in there, [Em] you know.
[G] [C] You can get away with [Eb] surfing along that bad boy all day [Em] long.
[C]
[E] Okay, also we've got the blues scale.
Okay, I'm sure you're all more familiar with this one.
The blues scale is essentially a minor pentatonic with an [Gm] added flat fifth.
So if we're in C again
the minor pentatonic [C] is as follows.
[Eb]
[Gm] [C]
Root, flat [Eb] third, [F] fourth,
[G] fifth,
flat [Bb] seven and root [C] again.
[Gm] [C]
And those notes in C are C, [Eb]
E flat, F,
[D] G, [G]
[Bb] B flat [C] and C.
But the blues scale is exactly that but with an added flat fifth, [Gb] which is the F sharp.
So it sounds like this.
[F] [G] [C]
[Gm] [Gb] [Eb] [C]
I'm sure you've all heard that one before.
[G] So yeah, and that obviously works great over minor chords and [Gb] dominant chords.
[G] Whereas the country pentatonic, that's primarily a major [Gb] chord sound.
Majors and dominant chords, that would sound [C] great on.
Especially [Ab] over dominant chords, I like to just [G] mix the two together and there are [Gb] hundreds of licks from playing with both of them.
So, you know, [C] just let's pretend we're just over C7 or C9.
You [G] can just
[Gm]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [C] just [Ab] by blending the two [Gb] scales together,
[G] you've got a whole range of country sounds that you can [C] get.
[A] [G] [Em]
[Eb] [C] [Gm]
[Em] [C]
[E] So yeah, just to recap, country pentatonic, that sounds great over majors and dominant chords.
That's the
major pentatonic with an added flat third.
And then you've got the blues [Gb] scale, which is the
[G] minor pentatonic with an added flat fifth and that works great over minor [F] chords and [E] dominant chords.
[Gb] So [Ab] yeah, there you [G] go.
Happy [B] soloing.
Thanks so much for watching.
