[Eb]
Memphis Rain, the first part of that song was something that I dreamed actually.
I had gotten this movie, [Gb] it was about this singer named Jay Retard,
who was a garage band sort of prodigy, really, based out of Memphis.
And the movie was called Better Than Something.
And I watched it and I was really [D] taken [G] by Jay's talent and his musical intuition
and his ability to seemingly be able to do these things very quickly.
And so I watched the movie a bunch of times, and then I had this dream
where Jay Retard was riding on a motorcycle.
I [Ab] was just kind of standing on the side of the road and he kept riding by me,
and [N] he said, In the Memphis Rain.
And then I was playing in Memphis maybe two weeks later, and I got there
and there was this lady at the bar before I played, and she was really upset for some reason.
And she really wanted to take it out on me, and she did.
But it was okay, and then she kind of stormed out of the bar and kind of was waiting for her boyfriend.
And as she was waiting for her boyfriend, it started raining,
and her boyfriend pulled up on his motorcycle, and then they got in a big fight outside.
And there was this big window next to the stage so you could kind of see all this happening.
And then she started yelling at him, and then every time she would yell too loud,
he would just sort of rev his motorcycle engine so loud that it would drown her out,
which was a very impressive move, I thought.
I wouldn't have thought of that.
And so there was all this Memphis motorcycle imagery.
So I just kind of took the two very abstract things and kind of made a little story out of it all.
And that's what ended up becoming Memphis Rain.
I wrote it in a hotel room.
I was on tour with my friend Bonnie Whitmore, and it sort of all kind of coalesced in my mind at that point.
And I [E] was like, oh, I should just take both of [G] those.
Like half J-retard on a [Am] motorcycle on fire, half lady [G] yelling at her boyfriend outside of [C] a restaurant slash music [G] club on a motorcycle.
Clearly those two things are a folk song.
So that's how I did it, man.
Her soaking leather jacket was heavy as the pain
[Am] In the [C] Memphis rain, [F] in the Memphis [G] rain
Diamond [C] drops are [G] sparkling on the [C] zipper and the [G] chain
In [Am] the Memphis [C] rain, in [F] the Memphis rain
Please, [E] [B]
[C] [A]
[G] silver lining my [C] old friend
[G] Come back [F] around [C] again
[Am] In the Memphis rain, [D]
[D] [G] in the Memphis rain
His [C] [G] CB750 has taken her away
[Am] In the Memphis [C] rain, in the Memphis [G] rain
That [C] motorcycle [G] madman has led [C] her heart [G] astray
[Am] In the [C] Memphis rain, [F] in the Memphis [G] rain
Please, [B] [C]
[A] [G] silver lining [C] my old friend
Come [G] back around again
[Am] In the Memphis rain, [D] [G] in the Memphis rain
[Gm] [Am]
[C] [F]
[G] Wishes are like lightning, so don't [C] you move [D] too slow
[G] [Am] In the Memphis [C] rain, [F] in the Memphis [G] rain
The pain comes when you touch one and have to let it go
[Am] In the Memphis [C] rain, in [F] the Memphis [G] rain
Please, [B]
[C] [A]
[G] silver lining [F] my [C] old friend
[G] Come back [F] around [C] again
[Am] In the Memphis rain, [D] [G] in the Memphis rain
[A] In [Am] the Memphis [A]
[D] rain, in [G] the Memphis rain
[C] [G] [G]
[C] [G]
[A] [G]
[E] [G] [C]
