It's a very special night tonight to actually be on stage at a Broadway Cares event.
Years ago when AIDS first started and Broadway Cares were there right at the beginning, I
always thought wouldn't it be great to do a show?
But you know, at that time I wasn't on Broadway or had nothing to do with Broadway.
I'd like to say to all the artists who performed tonight how incredibly moving it is that they
gave of their time and they sang my songs.
And you know, I'm a newcomer here and so tonight's tribute will stay with me forever.
So I'm very happy to be on Broadway.
There are a couple of drawbacks of course.
Those reviews, my dear.
I might do a revival of Sweeney Todd and have Ben Brantley and John Simon in the [C] cast.
But before I do this next song, I want to pay tribute to all the songs from Broadway
that I learned as a kid growing up.
All the great composers, authors, librettists.
If it wasn't for you, I probably wouldn't have loved music and there's so many songs to choose from.
But I think my favorite musical of all time was written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
And this is a song from that show, West Side Story.
There's [F] a place for us
[Gm] [C]
[F] Somewhere a [Bb] place for us
[Cm] Peace and quiet [Am] and [Dm] open air
[Bb] Wait [Eb] for us [C] somewhere
