Jack Straw was always one of my favorite songs.
It had such power in concert,
and it's a really great example
of how well-written Grateful Dead songs are.
Inspired by John Steinbeck's A Fog of Mice and Men,
Robert Hunter's story of Jack and Shannon
from Depression-era American heartland.
The lyrics are so poetic with such powerful imagery,
and Bobby's music really sets the stage,
starting mellow and ramping up the tension
until you're full-on into the chase.
I've always loved that change,
that D to B minor to A creates this feeling
of movement and running
with a touch of sadness and desperation.
The tension keeps building until it finally comes to blows,
and Jack kills his buddy.
Awesome.
Thanks to Jambase for having us,
and thanks for all you do for live music.
