[Ab] Hi, in this video, Mariano Delgado, [F] Ace [Bb] Guitarist of Buenos Aires, [Gm] is going to demonstrate some
scales and lines from a PDF based on the material from two previous videos, the Blues Arpeggio
and Soul Scales for Improvisation, the links for which are going to appear in the top right
hand corner and in the video description.
[G]
[Bb]
[A] Those are the videos to go to before this one if you are new to Soul Scales and Blues
Arpeggios as it explains their construction and theory.
[D]
[E] Ok, let's get started.
The first three exercises are based on the Blues Arpeggio.
Here is the said relatively unknown Blues Arpeggio of C to recap.
[Cm] [E] [G]
[C] [Ab] So, exercise 1, the Blues Arpeggio around the cycle of [F] fourths, [Bbm]
[Eb] [Ab]
[Db]
[Gbm]
[F] and you can keep going
around the cycle infinitely if you want to.
Exercise 2, the Blues Arpeggio around the cycle of fourths, this time with extended range.
[Bbm] [Eb]
[Ab] [Db]
Exercise 3, the Blues Arpeggio starting on the flattened third.
[F]
[Bbm] [Gb]
[Eb] [Ab]
Always a good idea to practice arpeggios from different starting places.
By the way, it is highly recommended that you develop these exercises, making them your
own, changing notes, rhythm, register etc.
Exercise 4, what we call the Soul Pentatonic as it has 5 notes.
Here it is firstly in C.
[Cm] [A] [C]
[Fm] [Am]
[Gm]
[Eb] [Cm] [Gb] [Ab]
[Abm] [Fm]
Now exercise 5, the Soul Pentatonic with a stretched range, sometimes going higher and sometimes lower.
[Dm]
[G] [Gm]
[Ab] [Db]
[C] The next scale we call the Soul Scale.
Some folk like to call it the Major Blues Scale however, and that is fine because we
don't want to fight over a name when the sound emotion is the most important thing.
Also, we think its sound is more soul than blues.
Here it is in C.
[D] [Eb]
[E] [C]
[Am] And here, the 6 note Soul Scale in action.
Exercise 6 of the PDF.
[Gm] [C]
[Bb] [Bbm] Exercise 7 contains lines on the Soul Scale.
By the way, and sorry to bleat on, but it is highly advised to make up your own lines.
[Bb]
Next we add the flat 7 into the mix which adds further blues flavouring.
We call this the 7 note Soul Scale.
Here it is slowly in C.
[C] [D]
[Eb] [Bb] [C]
Exercise 8 is this 7 note Soul Scale around the cycle of 4ths.
[G] [C]
[F]
[A] [Cm]
[Ab]
[Bbm] [Eb]
[B] Exercise 9, [Cm] this is similar but instead of going up to the tonic, the line goes up to
the bluesy flat 7.
[A]
[Am] [F]
[Gm] [G]
[Eb] [Db]
Exercise 10 is this 7 note Soul Scale, mainly in 2 octaves.
[Am]
[F]
[Eb]
Exercise 11 is lines based on this 7 note Soul Scale.
[G]
[C] [F]
[Bb]
[G]
[Bb] [Cm]
[F] Last but not least, we remind you once more that we suggest that you develop these exercises,
making them your own, by changing notes, rhythm and register.
Happy practicing.
Cheers.
