Steps - The band revisit their top music videos | Vevo Footnotes chords
Start Jamming...
Hi, we're Steps!
And we're taking you through some of our most memorable music [G] video moments.
And behind the scenes stories from over the years.
[D] Enjoy!
Who could have made it?
He's [G] gone!
He's erasing [D] my obsession from the westerns.
A [A] dance for a day.
Our first music video was, believe it or not, 25 years ago.
And it was a little song called 5678.
And we were all super excited to be on the set.
[G] Claire was the only band member who had done music videos before.
In a previous life.
And I guess the prep we had was very, very basic.
We had learnt our choruses, the line dance that everybody knows.
And we just put bikinis on.
And let's go.
Yeah, I remember that bit.
Speedos.
I mean, if it was today I would put a bikini on.
But there was very little prep.
Afterwards we had a massive party.
And I liked that [D] bit.
5678 was filmed in Spain on a beach.
Estepona beach it was.
One thing that I always, always remember from the video
is that there are close-up shots on all of us.
And the director [A] chose the [D] backgrounds [G] which were toilet doors.
Oh yeah!
They were the doors to the toilet based on [D] the colour of our eyes.
So we were faced in [G] front of the blue one.
The blue?
I [Dm] was
We were both on a green one.
What was mine then?
It must have been green because
Or maybe I've made that up.
Why do I remember it like that?
I'm sure it's like that though.
[E] [D] 5678
It was brand new for us as a new band.
It went into the charts and stayed in the charts for 17 weeks.
[Eb] So initially I think people [Fm] thought that we were like a
One hit wonder child thing.
Well, it didn't go
It [Am] went in at number 17, right?
Or 18.
And then it kind of kept going [G] up and down a little bit.
Um, but it was kind [D] of
I mean it's still being played today so it's obviously gone down fairly well.
[G] It was met with great critical acclaim.
And the week we released was the same band as
Do you remember?
Vanilla?
No way, no way!
Oh no way, no [Db] way.
Manana, manana.
And they beat us.
We were in a chart battle with Vanilla.
Yeah, they beat us!
But did they hang around 17 weeks?
Oh [Bm] way, no way!
For 25 years!
So [Gbm] [Bm]
[Gbm] [Bm] Tragedy is a very [G] special video to us.
It was our [A] first number one.
[G] And it's an interesting story behind the video because [Bm] at the time
we didn't really have the money [D] to have extras.
So [E] we asked our family and friends if they [A] would come and be the [G] extras on our video shoot.
For free!
For [Am] free!
For a nice [G] cup of tea.
I don't think they ever got that.
I don't think they ever got that.
They definitely didn't get food.
And do you know what's so lovely now, all these years on,
is that we've got all of our families [Bm] forever on the video.
So it's [A] really special and it's nice to watch back.
Our dad's walking us [D] down the aisle.
Our father's walked us down the aisle, which [G] is a nice practice run for when we all got [A] married.
[G] So yeah, I think it
[D] was a practical thing at the time,
but now it's just a really beautiful thing to have on film.
I think the dancing at the end of Tragedy, when we were all there with our family,
with our friends, Pete Waterman was on the decks doing the DJ thing.
It was probably a few hours [G] to film that.
[D] Obviously we taught as many people as we could the routine, as we do.
[E] Generally it was kind of a party vibe, I think, with Pete on the deck.
So it was a whole day in [Ebm] total for everything to be [B] filmed.
And I think that was the [Db] last section, [G] a few hours at the end.
[Cm] [Fm] Being [Eb] fashion icons is really important to us.
[Ab]
We have nobody else to blame for our fashion choices but ourselves.
[G] In every video we've designed our own costumes.
We've had [Ab] influences from, I guess, other [Fm] cooler artists and we've made it our own.
But Deeper Shade of Blue, somebody [Eb] else took the reins
[Ab] and they had a creative vision and I guess that's why it's probably one of our most [G] iconic videos.
Yeah, the looks in that, well, they stand up today against any [Db] other video.
I love it.
[Ab]
[Eb] Our [Fm]
[Eb] [Db] [Eb] music video [Ab] for It's The Way You Make Me Feel, it was kind of [Eb] big budget for us, [Ab] right?
It was.
[Fm] Beautiful ballrooms, incredible manor house, [Db] dancers.
[Dbm] And it was [Ab] based on the movie Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close, [Fm] which we all love.
But I have to say, [Db]
we were ahead of our time.
[Bb] Bridgerton [Ab] copied us.
I [Eb] [Ab]
had [Eb] [Ab]
these [Bbm] hair [Eb] extensions that were glued [Ab] to my head.
It was [Fm] like right down here.
It was raining and I had to walk [Dbm] outside.
[Eb] And [Dbm] I mean, I can do a kind of a, you [Ab] know, a walk where I look a bit [Dbm] distracted.
Pensive, yeah.
[Eb] Distracted.
Destructive.
[Db]
But, [Ab] and then I couldn't get, they wouldn't come out of my [Eb] head.
Like they were stuck and I had glue in my hair [Fm] for weeks afterwards.
That's one of the things [Db] I remember about that video.
[Eb] So [Ab] I'm sure everybody else loves the acting so [Eb] I'd love a video of us.
[Ab] [Dbm] [Abm] I'm just being [E] heartbreak in [A] this city.
But I keep on loving [B] you.
Our song Heartbreak in the City, [Em] we were doing [A] some promo, where was [C] it?
Backstage at the Royal Variety Performance.
Yeah, that's right.
We did an Insta Live.
And we [G] did an Insta Live and we asked Michelle Visage
if she would host [B] the Insta Live for us.
And while we were doing the chat, we said, oh,
[Em] we should get together and do something one day.
And straight [E] after the chat, [D] we discussed with management and said,
oh, should we actually do [C] that?
And we got in contact and she was like, yeah, I'll come and play with you guys.
So [A] basically, [B] we asked if she wanted to come and do [G] a cameo.
Is [B] that right?
A guest appearance.
A guest vocal.
A guest vocal.
And so much fun.
And we ended up [A] doing video with [Abm] her.
Lisa was in [Gbm] Dubai, so you didn't manage [B] to actually do the video [E] with her.
But you were stoning nicely.
But it [A] was really good fun.
Michelle is [Gbm] so much fun to work with.
Yeah, she was Michelle from Steps for a little while.
Great fun.
[D]
[Bm] The [Gbm]
[E] concept for our [D] brand new song, How To Forget,
[Bm] is basically the fact that [Gbm] we'd all been out on a good night out
[E] and ended up in a kebab shop.
[D]
[B] Yeah, that kind of it [Gbm] was like an after hours
place where [E] you're reflecting [Gbm] and debriefing with [D] your sandwich.
On your heartbreak.
[Bm] The party continues in the [Gbm] kebab shop.
[E] So Steps being [D] Steps, of course, we've got some little moves for our new
[B] single How To Forget.
[Gbm] And it goes a little bit like this.
[E] Easy to love.
[D] And then it's an Elvis hairline.
[B] Hard to forget.
[Gbm] And then you go boom after.
Just like that.
Easy to love.
Hard to forget.
Boom.
[Bm] Amazing.
Practice that at [Gb] home.
Send your ideas in.
[B] [D]
[Bm] [Gbm]
[E] [Gbm] [D]
[B] [Gbm] And we hope you enjoyed watching our favourite music video moments with [Bm] Vivo.
Thank you for watching.
Bye!
