We had a request to do this one.
We recorded this one back in 1985, I believe.
This song was passed on by Mr.
Gordon Broad, who composed this song.
For a lady that sells fruits on the side of the road, out in the White Hole area.
And I remember this lady because my dad used to travel around the island on a motorcycle.
My dad used to also stop there to buy some fruits, always bananas.
Anyway, when he passed on this song, he sang this song.
I fell in love with the song right at the moment.
But then when he asked us to record the song, he wanted us to do it in reggae.
I was kind of shocked when he said that.
I said, why would you like us to just ruin your song?
He said, it's the only way this song is going to take off.
So, kind of getting the gist of the song, we had to come up with a drum beat to the song.
And it was similar to what Jason's going to do now.
The next thing we had to come [F] up with is putting what they call a skank.
Just a slight skank to this.
Jason's going to do that too.
That was pretty simple.
Stick to this beat.
We had to find a bass lick to fit right into this song.
And here's Analu.
While carrying on, you know, we never put the melody to this song until we started listening to this.
Right in the studio, we came up with this melody.
It kind of just fit into the song with something like this.
[Dm]
[Bm] [Bbm] [F]
[D] [Gm] [C] [F]
[C] [F] [Bb]
She's sitting by [Dm] the [F] highway
Selling [Am] her papaya
[Em] [Dm] And [E] her green and ripe [F] banana
Walking [C] [F]
down [Dm] the damp
And [F] rocky road her humble wagon stops
She watched the sun peek through the [Bb] valley sky
[Bbm]
Smiles and wipes the sweat from her [F] brow
[D] Continues on and [Gm] starts her journey through [C] the highway [F] rising sun
[C] [F]
Sweet [Dm] lady of [Gm] Waihole
[G]
[Bb] Sitting by [F] the highway
Selling her [Gm] papaya
[G] [C]
[G] And her green and ripe [F] banana

[Bb]
[G] [Bb] [Bbm] [G] [F]
[D] [Gm] [Cm] [F] [Gm] [F]
[Em] [F] in the evening she would
Gather all her islands
After that she ends [Bb] another day
[Cm] [Bb] [Bbm] Carefully she [F] makes her way
[D] Beside the mountain [Gm] stream
As she sings an [C] island chant of [F] long ago
[C] Whoa, [F] sweet lady [Bb] of Waihole
[G] [Bb] Sitting [Dm] by the [F] highway
Selling her [Am]
[Em] papaya
[Dm] And [Gm] her green and ripe [F]
banana
[C] Whoa, [F] sweet lady [Bb] of Waihole
Sitting [Am] by the highway
[F] [Gm] [F] Selling her [Em] papaya
[Dm] And [C] [Gm] her green and [Dm] ripe banana
