[N] In 1969, this woman from Alabama created quite a sensation with her number
one song, Stand By Your Man.
24 years later, I guess, this guy from Texas made it a hit
all over again.
Tonight they're performing it together for the very first time.
Please
welcome Tammy Wynette and Lyle Levin.

[D] [Gbm]
[G] Sometimes it's hard to [D] be a woman
[E] [Am]
Given [D] all your love to just [G] one man
[C] You'll have bad times
You'll have good times
[A] Doing things that you don't [D] understand
[E] But if you love him, [D] you'll forgive him
[C] [Am] Even though [D] he's hard to [G] understand
[G] And [C] if you love him, oh, be proud of him
Cause [D] after all, [G] he's just a man
[D] Stand by [B]
[C] him, give him two arms to raise [G] to
And [E] something warm will come [A] to when nights [D] are cold and [G] lonely
Stand by [B] your man
[C] and show the world you love [G] him
Keep giving [D] all the love [B] you can
[Ebm] [E]
[C] Stand [D]
by [G] your [C] man

And I'm glad I got to meet Tammy for the first time
because we recorded the song, but I didn't ask her if I could record it.
And I was a little bit nervous because I always loved the song
and wanted to do a serious rendition of it,
but I was doing it really because it was, you know, sort [G] of odd for a man to sing that song.
Right.
But I like the idea of it because the guy in the song that she's singing about is,
he's kind of a jerk.
And I like the idea of saying, [Em] I know I'm a jerk, but love [Ab] me anyway.
Love me anyway.
But you know what's funny?
It's like, what is it, every 20 years, this song pops up
and some controversy, it was controversial, I guess, when it came out, what, 69?
It was.
Some of the women [Em] objected to, I think, the part where it said,
if you love him, you'll forgive him.
After all, he's just a man.
They said that was the old double standard.
Right.
Well, gosh, I didn't have anything like that in mind at all when I wrote it
because I have five girls and I by no means would ever write anything
that would belittle any of my girls.
But [B] I thought it was just a pretty love [E] song and that's all I intended when I wrote it.
And I'd like for a [C] man to say, you know, stand by your woman.
I'd love that feeling.
Well, even, [Ab] even what, just this past summer when I guess Hillary Clinton just,
you know, people off the top of their head, you go for the first thing you think of.
What would she said?
Well, I'm not, you know, stand by your man or something.
And it got you pretty upset, though.
Well, it did get me upset.
I [Em] don't think it got me upset as much as it hurt my feelings.
When you write [Gb] something, it's almost like giving birth to something.
[Db] That's your creation.
[Ab] That's something you do.
[Gb] And I've defended this song for 23 years.
And after a while, you know, I get to where I'm repeating myself.
Yes, but it means this and it means that.
But when she said it, I [Cm] sat up in the bed.
I was lying in bed watching television.
I said, what did she say?
I [E] couldn't believe that I had heard it.
And my husband said, she's talking about stand by your man.
And I thought, well, golly, that's what she's doing.
She's [Ab] standing by her man.
She's defending him on this, you know, this other woman or whatever it was.
And she is standing by him.
Now, did you call her or she called you?
Well, she called me.
She was very nice.
She was, she was very nice.
She apologized on television.
Then she [Gb] called me and apologized.
[Ab] She said they were [N] throwing questions at her very fast.
And she was trying to think fast and answer very fast.
And she apologized for it.
And so all is well.
See, in another 10 years, boom, something will happen again.
You'll come back.
I'll do it again.
Yeah, that's right.
Well, good for you.
Be back right after this.
