This next piece of music is called the Lonesome Boatman.
I'm gonna play [Am] it for you on the flute.
And I wrote a poem about it.
I wrote the piece of music
back in 1968.
I wrote a poem about it for, I was trying to write words about it actually for a [E] long time.
And I finally gave up because I couldn't get the words to fit the melody.
Because every time I thought about the melody I thought about it different.
So what I did, I wrote this poem and I called this poem Silent Tanny.
This was my sort of
imagination of who the Lonesome Boatman was.
So I'll do it for you.
A saw which nearly broke my [Am] heart
A tramp lay dying in a park
I knelt beside him to hear him [E] speak
The words he spoke [G] they were [D] oh so weak
He told me a story of long since past
[Dm] Of his sailing ship with his [A] long grey [Am] mast
Of his captain's cap [Em] with its shining braid
[C] And the wonderful voyages that he made
[G] Silent Tanny was his great ship's name
[E] Like a token of [Dm] love he spoke her name
She [D] sailed round the horn, aye [E] more than once
[A] She could cut through the waves
[Am]
like a sharpened lance
Believe me, [F] he said, his eyes filled with tears
[Em] Like a drunk on a corner trying to remember his years
He reached out his hand and I took [Dm] it in mine
I believe you, I said, and he gave a sad smile
I
[Am] remember the day when he towed her away
Her sides to her soar from the sea's angered spray
They said she's unfit [Em] for to sail out once more
And he [E] towed her more inward from her own sandy shore
[Em] And [Dm] as he broke my Silent Tanny, I [G] watched with a sigh
I remembered her [Am] beauty when I was a boy
She was my one love, my life's only dream
[Bm] When we [C] sailed out together as captain and [G] queen
I [Em]
[D] started to drizzle and I felt my hand tight
[Am] And he squeezed even harder as he ended the fight
And the crowd they had gathered and they [E] watched with dismay
As the [C] mambla's men came [F#] [F] and they took him away
So I got to my feet and I walked through that [Em] park
The sun, it was gone, but [E] it was not yet dark
My body was [Em] wet, [Dm] my clothes were not muddy
But my mind was rosed, for his ship, [Am] Silent Tanny
