[G] I went to the Juilliard [Bbm] School for jazz piano.
It's like a weird song by this [G] dude, Eric Satie, that we [D] used to study.
It's a very sad song, [G] but in some weird way it's happy, and it's major.
I know certain progressions [Gbm] are very recognizable.
[Bbm] So I remember when we were getting the record, Claire, they hit me and was like, yo, did
you [Ab] sample this piano?
[Fm] I was like, nah.
[G]
I was trying to create this weird Bach-ish piano, which reminded [Ebm] me of Crucifixus.
[B]
Descending [Dbm] chords in a cycle.
[C] I was just trying to [Abm] tap into something like that.
Not trying to be corny, [Bb] but underwater.
Maybe drowning.
[Ebm] [Ab]
[G] [Cm]
[G]
[Bbm]
I'm [Gm] surrounded.
[Ab] Bust down, bust [Fm] down, bust down, bust down, bitch, [G] I'm drowning.
[Cm] I was riding with my [Ab] homie.
We were [G] riding from the airport.
He was playing me some music that he was working on with some friends or something.
It was a small [A] drum interlude.
I said, yo, did you [F] make that part?
He was like, yeah.
I was like, yo, send me that song.
I cut it up and then sped it up.
Then I take out the lows because I wanted to add a kick.
And then I take out a little bit of highs because I knew I wanted to add high [Abm] hats.
Then I add this flanger.
[N] Logic has a good stock flanger.
It gives things a squishy sound and I just like that.
Without it, it sounds like this.
With it,
[Cm]
this piano loop, which I ended up [Ab] converting to audio so I can [G] cut it better.
That kind of piano would just drop [A] hard into this.
[Ab] [Fm]
[Cm]
[Ab] [G]
[N] I just started layering some drums on top of it.
I added this kick.
I added some high hats, which took me a little bit just to find the right bounce for high hats.
I just added these.
This clap, which I like to color my claps blue.
Layered all that up with the piano.
[Cm]
[Ab] [G]
There was this lead at the time.
I [Gm] used to love to use it.
I've used it in so many beats.
I was like, oh, it sounds like singing.
I used this lead and I just made it go along with the harmony.
[C] [G]
I [Bbm] decided it [G] needs some singing on it.
Anybody who knows me knows I sing [Ebm] all the time and I'm pretty terrible at it.
But I sing my heart out and I sing very, very loud.
This is what I originally did.
[G]
[Db] [Ab]
I auto-tuned it up and I added some reverb.
[G]
[Cm] These two things made it special to me because they seemed like call and response.
[Ab] [G]
I like to layer keyboards, so I layered this [Cm] thing from FabFilter.
[Bb]
I didn't [Fm] really quantize it because I just didn't want it to be quantized.
[Cm] Then I layered this.
[Ab]
[G] [C] I added this bass, which is like, man, a lot of my records that I've placed have no 808s.
This has no 808s.
I used this bass from Sylenth.
It's called Buka.
[G]
[Ab] [G] [F] It's a cool sound pack I got from a friend that [B] has these weird-ass presets from Massive.
[C]
[B]
[Bb] I literally just [C] added bass to open it up, [G] left the piano [G] in, [Ab]
[Fm] [Cm]
[Ab] [G] and that's how we got the record.
[Bbm]
[G] [Ab]
[Fm] [Cm]
I was doing a lot of Kehlani's music, so I [Ab] was on the road with her.
[G] We had a radio show in Phoenix or something.
I saw Boogie.
I was [Bbm] like, yo, bro, I went to school in New York.
I know [F] you had a lot of respect in [Ab] the city.
I [Fm] made a lot of Kehlani shit.
He was like, all right, cool, come up [Cm] to the hotel room and play me some beats.
I was like, cool.
[Ab] I remember he was just sitting [G] there.
I played the beat.
He said, and then he was like, Rich [Ab] So Icy.
[Fm] I was like, [Cm] that's kind of hard.
He was [Ab] like, yeah, can you send me that beat?
I'm going to record it as soon as I get back.
He played me it, and I was like, [F] tight.
He hit me later and was like, I got Kodak [G] on it.
I was like, [Ab] tight.
