The water is wide,
[Bb] I [F] can't cross over, nor do [Dm] I [Bb] have light [C] wings to fly.
Build [Am] me a boat that can [Dm] carry two.
[Bb]
And [C] both shall row, my [F] love and I.
A ship there is, [Bb]
and sails [F] the sea.
She's [Dm] loaded deep, [Bb]
as deep [C] can be.
But not [Am] so deep, as the love [Dm] I'm in.
[Bb]
And I know [C] not how, [G] I sink or [F] swim.
The water is wide, [Bb]
I can't [F] cross over, nor do [Dm] I have
[Bb]
light wings [C] to fly.
Build me [Am] a boat that can [Dm] carry two.
[Bb]
And both [C] shall row, my love [F] and I.

When love is young, [Bb]
and love [F] is fine, it's like [Dm] a gem.
[Bb]
When first [C] it's new, but love grows [Am] old, and waxes [Dm] cold,
[Bb]
and fades [C] away like the morning [F] dew.
The water is wide, [Bb]
I [F] can't cross over, nor do [Dm] I have [Bb]
light wings [C] to fly.
Build me [Am] a boat that can [Dm] carry two.
[Bb]
And both [C] shall row, my [F] love and I.

And both [C] shall row,
[C] my [G] love and [F] I.

I can't help going into a bit of a reverie whenever I hear Bruce sing that so beautifully.
It takes me right back.
Bruce would sit opposite me on a chair, Keith would be on a chair in between,
and Athol would be standing up with his double bass,
a little like the slide that you saw at the start of the show,
which was taken on the ship when we were performing,
because we worked our passage, of course, over to England at that time.
And of course we were doing our folk songs and traditional songs and gospels,
and when we got to England it was the thing,
because the Beatles had really made it big doing their own songs,
and they were fully fledged composers with some fantastic lyrics.
We've recently taken great pleasure in recording In My Life,
which was a remarkably wise lyric that they wrote at such a young age,
and at 50 years down the track we've got a lot of memories
that we put into that film clip, Within My Life.
