[Cm] for coming and for [E] listening.
[B] [E]
[B] [E] I was asked to sing this and I do [F#] often end with it because it's a song
[A] that everybody [C] knows if they [B] know any of mine at all.
[A] [B] Recorded by [C#] lots of other people more famous
than [B] me.
[E] [N] [D] [A]
[E] It's
[B]
[E]
[F#m]
[N] the story of this digger of the 17th century.
It's [G] [G#]
1649.
In 1999 there was
[N] an event
on St George's Hill which is near Weybridge and which is a very posh Surrey town [G] actually.
[N] They wanted to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the founding of the digger community,
April 1st 1649 it was.
I had this whole lot of concerts and events and discussions
a song about Lin San [Fm] Lido, Lin San Lido digger.
[F#m] [B] At [E] the [G#m] end there [N] was a gathering of
[F]
[N]
extremely
expensive mock Elizabethan mansions with high [B] security.
[F] Pot singers because of the
[B] security.
[Fm]
This British I think was it, or this John Lennon, also brought the [B] house up.
[E] So it became political.
[D] [C#] [B] [A]
[E] But the digger [Am] community [F#] was lasted about a year
[E] and then it was driven, [Fm] it was destroyed by the [N] soldiers and the landowners and the clergy
particularly a certain Parson Platt who [Fm] was very [B] vindictive.
So there [E] we are this is a song that
[G] commemorates a defeat as we less often do.
But [B] I [G] have to say this that Parson Platt,
who remembers [E] Parson Platt?
I know who remembers [B] Parson Platt, one of the biggest
[E] live on in the
[A#] writings, in [A] Lin San Lido's [B]
writings.
[A] So it's not quite [E] clear who won that.
This is the song, do join in if you've lost chance to sing.
In 1649 to St George's Hill, a rightly bound neck force of genius came to show
the land.
[B]
[A] [E]
We come in peace,
[C#] [B]
[A]
[E]
[C#m] [B]
[E]
[C#m] [B]
[A] [E]
[B]
[E]
[B] [A]
[E]
[B] we've got [A] a breed who feeds the [B] rich while poor [E] are scarred.
We work, we eat together, we need [B] no salt.
We [A] will not bow to the [F#m] hostiles, our [E] favourite,
to the Lord still we are free.
Though we [B] are poor, you give us [A] all, [E] stand up for [B] glory.
[E]
[A]
[C#m] [E]
[A] [E]
[A]
[E]
From the meadows, the orders came, they sent [A] the hired men and troopers [E] to wipe out the nigger
slaves, tear down their cottages.
[B] They were [A] dispersed, but [E] still the vision lingers on.
You poor take courage, you [B] rich take care.
The [A] Lord has made a common thread.
[E]
[B]
We [A] come in peace, the [E] orders [B] came to [E] cut them down.
We come [A] in peace, [E] the orders came to cut them down.
