[G] I had an uncle, my mother's brother, and when I was growing up in a little house outside
[Abm] Oxford on the stairs there was a photograph of him, aged 22, in his uniform.
He was a submarine officer.
And my dad, who was an academic, a professor of [F] classical archaeology, he was never exactly
the action man type.
And so, you know, as a kid growing up I always looked at this picture on the wall of my uncle
Stephen in his uniform and he was the sort of action man of my childhood.
And he died in a submarine, not actually in action, they just sank while they were, you
know, doing exercises in Plymouth Sound or somewhere.
And I always sort of identified with him in a strange sort of way, not only [N] because my
mum must have missed him, but also, you know, he was so young when he died and I couldn't
imagine getting to that age and not having a lot in common with him.
At the same time, it just, there was something about the pathetic death of sort of drowning
in this tin can that seemed to me to summon up the whole thing about the British Empire,
you know, just sinking like a stone.
And so one of our submarines was the song that came out of that.

A hungry heart to regulate their breathing One morning the winter boys are bruising in

Down below the winter boys are waiting for [A] the storm
Why, by empire, [G] empire, by fire [B]

Shallow water channel [A] of time
