Tin Whistle Lesson - Garrett Barry's Jig chords
Start Jamming...
Hey guys, I'm gonna play a tune called Garrett Barry's jig.
It's a great standard tune
It's one you'd find in every beginner's book of Irish session tunes
It's it's a real common one and there's one that I played a lot when I was younger
But I kind of fell out of rotation.
It came up at a session recently.
I thought well that it really is a nice tune
So I thought I'd make a good one to work on here.
It's a good it's a good standard one to have
Particularly for flute whistle pipe players.
It's it's a very popular tune
So run through the basic melody kind of break it down piece by piece and come back and hit some of the ornaments and
Variations and that kind of stuff.
So here we go
You [F] getting part their
[Em]
Second section here
Part again
And the middle section here tends to stay on a few few notes, I'll come back and add some rules on that one
That part again
To finish it off just kind of goes back down the scale
[E]
So that's the whole a part run through all together now just you can kind of hear how those parts kind of line up hopefully
[Em]
[E] Of [E] course you played a a that play the same part twice
So we'll come back to that once we play the whole the whole tune
But for now, we'll do the the B part here and it starts up on the second day
[N] [E]
In the second section here
[Eb] [Em]
The third section is basically a repeat of what we did in the beginning of that
And it finishes off kind of the same way as we did the a part
[E]
So play the whole B part so we can put those together.
Hopefully that'll make some sense
[Em]
[E]
[D] So that's the basic melody hopefully you're able to pick that up
I'm gonna run through it now with all the ornaments and some of the fun stuff that I like to do with it
I'm not gonna play it too quickly so you can still catch that melody.
Hopefully but here's how I like [Em] to play it
Cool little tune a couple things that I do on this one that are
I don't think I've covered in any of the lessons before this one spends a lot of time in that low D
Really on the end of the B part and mostly through the a part as well
See how it finishes up.
So that's one thing I like to do.
I kind of do a crayon and then a couple of extra grace notes
That's one of those where you can it sounds kind of cool
I think particularly on the flute and the pipes but it works well on the whistle too
The trouble is you got to make sure you that those two extra grace notes sound
It's easy to crush those and make them so they don't come out
[Bb] Because you're kind of lifting that finger twice
It's kind of [E] an odd movement, but sounds kind of cool and helps break it up
The other thing you can do is which I did when I played it the first time
So a couple things to try there.
Now the other thing too on the B part
[Em]
[Ab] Is that extra tap on the C [Em] natural kind of a cool sound?
[C] It's a bit again a bit of an odd movement to get used to it's not really a an ornament
You'd practice too often probably but it sounds kind of cool there.
So play around with that one
It's a great tune.
You probably found a thousand recordings of it online
Because it's a real popular tune so kind of a cool one though and let me know if you got any questions
So thanks for listening
