Start Jamming...
And it's a beautiful masterpiece, but instrumentally it just needed a little release.
It needed a little something different.
So I put this little bridge in there.
And what the bridge actually is, is the Beatles' Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And the reason I put that in there is because Billy Joel said in a workshop once
that when he saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show,
that that was the moment that changed his life,
where he said, that's what I want to do.
I want to play rock and roll music and be like those guys.
That was that moment.
And he is a Beatles fanatic.
And so what I did is, [B] I came up with [E] this song.
And so it [G#m] goes, [B]
[G#m]
[F#] [B]
[F#]
[G#m] [E] [G#m]
[F#] [B]
[E] [B]
chorus.
[A]
[E] [Em]
[C#] [G#m] [C#]
[F#]
[G#m] [B] [E]
[G#m] [C#m]
[G#m]
[B]
Now the bridge that I wrote goes,
[G#m]
[F#] [E]
[B]
[F#] Yeah, yeah, [E]
yeah, [Bm]
[F#] yeah.
[E] [B]
[F#]
[G#m] So it's a little release for us because the whole song is,
[A#] [G#m]
[E] it's very Elizabethan sounding.
It's a very interesting song.
And I save this melody until the last time [B] around.
And every time.
[G#m]
[C#] [G#m] [F#]
[G#m] [C#] [F#]
[B]
[G] [G#m]
[B]
Right.
So [C#] when I do the bridge part, I'm going,
[G#m] [F#]
[E]
[D#]
[C] so I'm actually [C#m] doing a reverse roll.
[Cm] [D#]
[F#]
[E] [B]
[F#] [E]
[B]
[F#] [E]
[G#m] [F#]
[E] Did Billy Joel's love of the Beatles influence you choosing that?
Yeah, well, when I gave him [G] the CD and I said,
I took a little license and put a little bridge in it,
he looked [C#m]
at me like, you're kidding?
You changed one of my songs?
[N]
Who are you?
Billy was very nice.
And he just kind of smiled and, you know,
it was like I didn't know whether [Fm] he [G#] was insulted or not.
But I said, I took a little bit of license and blah, blah, blah.
And then I got an email from his bass player and said,
we just listened to it for the 50th time on the bus and he loves it.
Don't [E] worry about it.
Did it influence you in that, choosing that part?
Because he loved the Beatles?
[G#] Of course.
It was [G#m] my way of saying, I know that about you, [E]
you know what I mean?
And I was willing to take that chance because a writer as successful
and as so great as Billy Joel [D] or Elton John, any of those guys,
to [N] come along and change one of their songs is a bit of a wise guy to do.
[C#m]
But [B] I had to say that I had [A#m] to do it [D] because I'm an instrumentalist
and I [G] had to make it work for me, you know what I mean?
I still wanted to play [F] his song, but it still had to work for me.
[N]
