[E] I'm Tommy Stinson and you're watching What's in My Bag.
[B]
[Gb] [E]
[B]
[Gb] [Dbm]
[E] [B]
[Gb] [Bm] Today's [A] What's in My Bag is this [E] record here, Pet Sounds.
[A] What makes this record incredible is not [E] just this record, but the actual [A] version of the record, just the vocals [E] only.
It's an incredible listen.
If [Gbm] you've ever heard these songs or heard this record [F] at all, you'll know the [E] background vocals [A] and all that stuff are really [D] gorgeous.
But just to hear [N] just the vocal takes alone is a whole other revelation about the Beach Boys.
It's a [G] fantastic pick.
[Em] [Bm]
[A] [G] [E]
[Am] [B]
[D] [A]
[Bm] [C] My second pick here, James Luther Dickinson.
Can't speak enough about this guy.
He went on to do many great things.
One of them was a replacement record.
One of them was a perfect record [G] of mine.
[Am]
[G]
[Gm] [C] [E] [D] What's
[C] [G] funny about this record is that it's a record that's been around for a long time.
[C] Our tour manager friend Aaron over here was looking at the [Gb] back and looking [Gm] at all these names [C] and he goes,
Who's Sid?
[Bm] Because [G] our guitar player Steve [C] Selva said, That's Steve's dad.
And he didn't know that.
He thought, Who's Sid Selva?
He said, Steve's dad.
This lady, Mona Del Rey.
I saw her play at Austin City Limits a few years back.
And I [Em] really wasn't crazy familiar with any of her stuff, but I liked some of the stuff I'd [D] heard.
And she came out and [C] played.
I remember being mesmerized.
[Em] [D]
My [C]
[Em] fourth pick, Bluebell [F] Noel by the Kakuto Twins.
[Am] When this record came out, it was [C] a super soothing, [F] beautiful kind of background music to me.
I [C] listened to it in earnest when it first came out and liked it a whole lot.
But [F] really it became background music for when I had my first kid.
[C] When Ruby had been born, this was played all the time.
She recognized the [F] record from when she was a [G] kid.
I love
[C] [G] that.
[Em]
[Am] [G]
Funny
[C] [G]
[A] story, the babies.
The babies.
I had a few songs back in the 70s that were minor hits [Am] and all that in the States.
But the cool thing is, I met John White [B] once at a crazy, [A]
bizarre [Am] kind of show.
They only did one of them in [Bm] New York.
It was called the Rock and [C] Roll [Bm] [D] Award Show.
It was us and Keith [A] Richards.
Tin Machine played.
Tina [B] Turner.
[G] And he was there.
I got [A] to chat with him.
One thing I never realized about John White was he's [Bm] really fucking tall.
[G] And a sweetheart of a guy.
[Cm]
[G]
[Cm] [G]
[C] [G]
[Cm] [F] [G]
[Cm] Blunt on Blunt, my go-to record when I'm [F]
trying [E] to get [F] lyrical things happen in my head.
[Am] I'll put this baby on.
I'll just [Ab] let it [Dm] seep in.
What it does to me, for me actually, is it [Bb] [Dbm] helps you kind of [Ab] [Bb] remind you of all the different [F] things
that he was able to put in a lyric to describe a moment, a sound, [Am] a day, a place.
One [Dm] of my favorite Bob Dylan songs [F] is Sad [C]-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.
It's just a gorgeous song.
[Bb] I've always loved that.
[C] In all of its 11 [Em] minutes.
[A]
[Em]
[D] [Am] Gang of Four.
This record here, there was a 12-inch that came up that had the song I've heard called
I Love a Man in a Uniform.
It [C] was a 12-inch dance mix that had also To Hell with [A] Poverty on it.
When they played Minneapolis when I was that [G] big, I was 17.
[C] I couldn't get into the show because I was too young.
So in order [Gm] to get into the show, [Am]
I had to move PA gear.
Cut to we're loading [G] in and I'm trying to pull down a massive [E] bass cabinet.
And I'm by myself in my little chucks and I'm going down the ramp of a semi [B] all by myself.
And the thing [E] consumed me and I start to slip.
I'm about to go [N] fully back and someone grabs me just as I'm falling.
Grab the thing, much bigger guy obviously.
But that was one of my favorite shows.
They came out and they did both those songs and I'm just sitting there going,
Oh my God, this is the coolest thing I've ever seen.
[Fm]
[Eb] [Fm]
[G] [Ab]
[Eb] [Ab]
[Eb] [Bbm]
[C] [G] Right there, the jam setting sounds.
Growing up listening to punk rock and stuff, this is one of my,
mine and my best friend David [Gbm] Roth's favorite bands.
This [Gm] has this great song called Thick as Thieves on it that kind [Gb] of always reminded me [G] of him.
Because [Am] we were thick as thieves as kids.
But this was sort of our, you know, kind of our favorite growing up [G] punk rock record.
And Paul Weller, I mean, can't say enough about this guy.
He's a fantastic songwriter, fantastic singer.
[E]
[A] I'm a young girl [E] in a brick house [A] with stone.
I'm tongue-leaved, [E] I have to stop and shout.
There's [A] no restraint on me [E] unless you are brave.
[A] There's no everything [E] that we could say.
[Ab] Chelsea Grylls, Chelsea Grylls I should say.
Some of the best songs by some of the writers on this record, that's their [Eb] best bit.
Jackson Brown [Fm] I'm not a huge fan of.
I think he wrote Fairest of the [F] Season and somewhere there's a [Db] Feather I think.
[Cm] Great songs.
[Fm] This is like quintessential alt-rock [Cm] beginnings as far as I'm concerned.
[Fm] Everyone that I know that's a songwriter of any [Db] note [F] lives by this record.
I stop [Dm] my rambling.
[Bb]
I [F] don't do [Dm] too much gambling [Bb] these days.
[Am]
These days.
[A] Thanks for shopping with us today.
Yeah, what's in my bag could be what's in your bag.
He's just stuck [D] in the wrong side.
He can do the worst he can.
He's looking for a place to [A] hide.
He's got nothing [D] to tell me why.
Love is like a swing to the sky.
