[Dm] [D]
[Dm] [D]
I've cried enough at this thing, the last year follows a lifetime, so I'm going to be really strong.
And last year [G] we had a cousin of mine who's suffering from cancer, [Am] who we've since lost.
[G] We decided to have a men's gathering at some Goombanga country back home.
[Dm] I [A] see shadows [D] on the hill.
While I was there, we [G] talked about all our [Dm] history [D] there as well.
Our [G] old uncles told us about things.
They [D] mentioned this big old massacre that happened up the river.
[G] And [D] there was a place where we weren't allowed to go [A] as kids, that [D] we always wondered why
we weren't allowed to go to that side of the river.
We'd swim over there chasing [G] turtles, and my nana go, hey, get [D] back here.
And as soon as she said that, you just got back there.
Men, women, children, slain, buried [A] up there, all [D] that rain.
[Dm]
[D] And there was a very funny feeling in our stomach when we got over to the other side
of the river, and I always wondered why.
Well, it was because this massacre happened there.
It became a part of my story that night, sitting around the campfire.
I woke up in the dead of night, [Dm] saw two men in the firelight.
They had scars upon their chest, said their [E] spirits [D] cannot rest.
They spoke to me in tongue, answered back at a very once, never spoke that way before.
I am [A] not a man [D] by law.
I see shadows on the hill, from beside the old sawmill, where my people were killed.
I see [A] shadows [D] on the hill.
So on my way home, I kept thinking of my cousin Matthew, who was very, very sick at the time,
and I put together some words for him.
[Am] [D]
Where the catfish makes its ring, [G] and the [Dm] birds refuse to sing,
[G] voices follow family lines [A] as they whisper through [D] the pine.
And around the granite [G] stones, they'll forever [Dm]
be alone.
Their [G] killers got off free, [D] but their shadows never leave.
Before he passed away last year, I got him this song, and I sent it down,
and as he was going through the palliative part of his life, [G] [D] he said,
I've got to stop listening to this song, because I don't want the [Dm] specialness to wear off.
And [G] he wrote me this beautiful letter that said that.
So [Fm] it was part of my story, and it's Matthew's song, and now I'm giving it to you.
This is our [A] story [Ab] now, and it's all about the shadows on the hill.
[D]
Thank you, Matthew.
He would be absolutely wee in his [Dm] pants at this happening.
[A] Thank you, everyone, for listening, and [Dm] that's just a huge honour.
Welcome to your story, Australia.
We love you.
