[E] Walter Brennan is a veteran movie actor whose career has spanned four decades.
He has many wonderful memories relating to his career,
but tonight we've asked him to share with us some of his personal recollections.
Ladies and [Eb] gentlemen, [N] Mr.
Walter Brennan.
[Eb] [Fm]
[Bb]
[Eb]
Hello.
[Gm] Every now and again I sort of like to come up here in [Ebm] the attic and [Ab] sort of poke around.
[Fm] Most of the things [Ab] that have found [Bb] their way up here, they [Ab] just ain't of [G] much earthly value.
But for one [Gm] reason or another, I just never had the heart [C] to throw them away.
[A]
Oh, hiya Martha.
[N] You've still got a wonderful shape.
Inside this old trunk, there's a lot of memories from a lot of years.
[E]
You know, it took three years and a lot of gum wrappers to get a ball of tin foil this big.
[N] I guess that's better than sitting around and wasting your time like some young folks do today.
Hey, look at this.
[E]
This is a hula dance that painted on a necktie.
And I got that in Hawaii.
Boy, that was some vacation.
[N] Two weeks in a tie store.
[Em]
Oh, here's [N] Martha's old foxtrot.
Sharp.
Why, we thought you'd worn it off in the winter of 29.
Come on, boy, roll over.
Attaboy, roll over.
That's a boy.
You know, I taught him how to play dead and he's never forgotten that trick.
Here's your menu.
[E] This is from a restaurant in Atlantic City.
Here's where Martha and I had a romantic dinner.
Pierre's House of Clams.
[N]
[E] I remember we had, [B]
we dined on roast legged [E] clam.
Clam [Db] salad and clam ice cream.
[A] You know, it was the first time ice cream ever squirted [N] me.
I [E] know we ate so much that night I couldn't finish my coffee.
I think I'll do it [N] now.
It ain't warm, but it's sure strong.
No wonder it's Pierre's special grind of clam coffee.
I'll [Em] never forget later on that week I had a great time with my wife.
I got a long distance telephone call from Snag Wearish all the way [E] from California.
I was busy pumping up the inner tube at the time and I had to put Snag on hold.
[A] Hello,
[N]
Snag?
My golly, he's still holding on.
How are you, Snag?
What?
Feeling poorly, huh?
Well, listen, Snag, I got
Listen, Snag!
[Dbm] [G]
I can't [F] talk now.
[Em] I'm busy [Eb] reminiscing.
[Bb] Say, [Bm] do you mind if I put you on hold?
[N] Well, Snag always was a patient man.
[E] Well now, what's this?
[B] It's an old [A] player piano roll.
I wonder [E] if it's still working.
I remember this old player piano.
I wondered what happened to the young fella that used to come over Saturday nights and play.
[A] He was a sweet little guy and a great big nose.
[E]
[N]
Hey, he ain't changed a bit.
A little dustier, that's all.
Hey, what's going on here?
Fish?
What?
What ever happened to the two beers you went out for?
Prohibition [Em] came in.
Oh, well, [B] while you were out, there was a phone call for you from Snag Warris.
[Bb]
[G] When did he call?
[E] It was either in 1932 or [N] 1938.
What'd he say?
I couldn't hear him.
There was a dog barking.
Well, pardon me, say, you want to do one of the old songs?
Oh, no.
Why be old-fashioned?
Let's do one of the new songs I hear you playing on the radio [C] downstairs.
Yeah, well, which one is that?
The one that goes like this.
[D] Good [Dm] morning, [G] starshine.
[D] [C] The [D] earth [Am] says [D] [C] hello.
[G]
You [Bm] twinkle [Am] above us.
[D] [Am] We [G] twinkle below.
Good [D] morning, starshine.
[Am] You lead us along.
[B] My love and me [Em] as we sing
our early [D] morning [E] singing song.
[Gb] [G]
