When I wrote Is It Me Or You, it was about a relationship with a childhood friend that
was spiraling out of control.
His life was spiraling out of control.
I wrote it as if it were a one-on-one romantic relationship, but that's just for the song's sake.
It was more of two friends that had known each other since [A#]
age 10.
He passed away after that, [Em] and so the song went from being extremely personal to being
one of those songs that I thought I'd probably never record.
All these years later, it seemed the right time and the right reason to honor that relationship.
I think alongside the other songs like Wanderlust, which was written about Graham Parsons, Company
Man, which was written about my dad, even some of the outside material like Coal Tattoo
that Billy Ed Wheeler wrote about a coal miner's life, it seemed to work with [D] those [C] type of songs.
[E] Again, [G] the instrumentation and the [Em] performance really brought it to [D] life, and I was [C] really happy.
[Em] Tears [D] on the [G] inside of [E] your [Em] face, [D]
[C] [Em] but not [G] on the outside.
[D] No pain can penetrate [Am] the calluses.
[C] Allices [D] you've built [Bm] on the ground [E] floor, and a hole [D] in the dark [Em] side of your [D]
past.
[C] [Em] So [D] long since [G] you've tried to [D] replace the wooden mask that [Am] hangs around your [C] neck.
[Em] Some token of war.
[C] A [G]
survivor, [D] what you call yourself.
[Am] Have you looked [C] in the eyes of [D] someone else?
[B] Is it me [E] or you?
[C] [D] That's killing you, baby.
Is it me [Bm] or you?
[C] [G] That's trying to [D] hang on.

[C] [Em] Like [G] a bullet dancing in [F#] your [Em] breast, [D]
[C] [Em] you [G] had the answer [D] pointing at my chest [Am] with your
aiming eyes, [C] the same [D] eyes that used to be [Bm] my [Em] window.
[C] A [G] denier, [D] never seeking help.
[Am] But has it grown [C] too late to help [D] yourself?
[B] Is it [E] me or [C] you?
[D] That's killing you, baby.
Is it me [Bm] or [C] you?
[G] That's trying to [D] hang [Em] on.
This ain't [C] nobody wants to [Em] save you.
Nothing in [D] this world can [Am] save you.
Maybe as a [Bm] savior, if [C] I only knew.
Is it [Em] me or you?
