[A] [E] [B]
[Em] [B] Oh, there's dolphins out there.
Just came up.
There you go.
[B] We love it here because [E] it's right on the water, and our boat is right over there, and
it's very, very [D] convenient.
There's a lot of tax advantages to [B] living here.
After I got out of the rock and roll thing with Play That Funky Music, I was retired
at like 40 years old.
I just could [Em] stop.
You know what, they always say [F] that one song doesn't make a career, [Fm] but in the case of
that song, [C] it was, [Fm] it's still so [C] big.
[F]
[Bb]
The rock clubs were closing down, [F] and discos were opening up.
So that's, one night in the dressing room, I told them, I says, look, I said, I'm having
problems more and more all [Gb] the time.
I said, bookin' us.
And I said, we either have to do more of this dance stuff, or I'm not going to be able to book us.
And the drummer spoke up, and there [F] had been some black people coming to the nightclubs
that we had, to the discos that we had played, this particular disco, actually, and said,
are you white boys going to play some funky music?
And they were just kidding us.
So the drummer, Barani, spoke up, and he said, well, it's like those people keep saying,
Play That Funky Music, white boy.
I said, well, yeah.
I said, but you know, that's not a bad idea.
Get the rock dancing, and singing, and moving, moving, and [G] just when it hit me, somebody
turned around and [Eb] shouted, Play That Funky Music, white boy.
Play That Funky Music right.
Play That Funky Music, [Gb] white boy.
[Fm] Lay down the boogie [C] and play that funky music till you die.
[Eb] I tried to find a way [Dm] that we could just [F] fit in with what was going on, a way to cross
both rock and disco.
And for me, it was just what was going on with us.
I mean, [Bb] I just wrote down word [Eb] for word what [F]
we were going through.
Hey, wait a minute.
Now, first, it [C] wasn't easy changing rock and roll and maze.
And we're getting shaky.
I thought I'd have to leave it behind.
But now it's so much better.
It's so much better.
I'm funking out and get out of my way.
But I'll never lose that feeling.
No.
[F]
I took it around to every record label, and I got close, but no deal.
Because everybody was worried about [Eb] that white boy thing, this and that, and this and that.
Even my father, when I took it to his home to play it for him for the first time, he
took the needle off of the record.
He said, oh, no, you [Ab] can't do that.
I said, what?
I already did it.
He said, you can't say that.
You've got to take that out.
I [G] said, no, if I take it out, it's going to kill the record.
I said, that's the song.
That funky music, my boy.
That funky music.
Yeah.
[D] That [G] funky [Bb] music, my boy.
[F] Play it [Bm] on the boogie and [A] play that funky music [E] till you die.
The song was hitting so [Gb] fast that [E] maybe four or five weeks into it, it was like [D] diving
toward number one.
It [E] just came out and started, boom.
We got two Grammy nominations, one American Music Award.
We played live on the Grammys.
And the night we played live, my parents, I took them out to L.A.
And so my dad is looking around.
Ringo Starr's over here.
Steve Allen's over there.
Henry [D] Mancini's over here.
Beach Boys are over there.
And there's my dad and my mom.
And [E] my dad, he said, man, look at this.
I said, well, yeah, this is the Grammys.
What do you want?
He said, remember when I told you you should take White Boy out of that record?
I said, yeah.
He said, I am so glad you didn't listen to me.
I said, well, [E] [Eb] I knew the record was dead without it.
[A] Funky music, my boy.
Funky music, my boy.
Funky music, my boy. Funky music.
[E]
