Dancing [Cm] _ _ _ [Gm] in [Cm] the moonlight
And it's a happy [Fm] song, but the reason why you wrote it
wasn't happy at all.
[Cm]
Well, no.
_ [Bb] _ [Cm] A bunch of friends [Fm] and I were running a nightclub
in St.
Thomas in the Virgin [Cm] Islands,
and we decided one day to take a schooner
from St.
Thomas to St.
Croix.
And my girlfriend and I got very sick
going across to St.
Croix, and when we got there,
[G] I was glad to get on shore, and my friends were fine.
They went back out on the boat to spend the night,
and Adrian and I said, no, no, we're not going out there.
We see the boat out in the harbor, you know.
_ _ No, we'll see you tomorrow.
But I had forgotten to bring my wallet.
I was just out of it.
_ And my girlfriend [E] said,
why don't we just camp out on the [Ab] beach here?
_ So we did.
We fell asleep on the beach under a full moon,
and _ that's all I remember clearly.
[E] I remember being hit really hard,
and five [Fm] guys were attacking us with baseball bats.
So I just remember getting hit again and again
and then losing consciousness.
_ _ _ I found out later from Adrian that the leader raped her,
[F] and the rest were in line to rape her.
_ And they put a towel over her head,
and every time she would make a noise, they'd slap her.
And _ _ she thought she was going to be raped by the rest of them
and maybe killed, and then she said
there was this horrible _ animal noise, this howling.
And apparently I saw fit to recover consciousness
and [Ab] attack them.
I don't know how I could have.
I had one arm dislocated and ribs broken,
my face all fractured. _
But [Fm] I think I made enough noise to scare them off,
_ which probably [C] saved our lives.
_ [Em] _
_ _ _ _ [C] _ _ I lost consciousness again,
[Dm] and _ [Fm] I woke [D] up in the hospital [G] later.
And I _ [Am]
[C] remember the doctors were [Dm] talking,
and they said, well, is he going to [G] make it?
[Cm] And one of the [G] other doctors said, I don't know.
[C] And I realized they were talking [G] about me,
and it really made me mad.
I thought, [Am] yeah, I'm going to make it. _ _
Anyway, [Dm] so long story short,
I had to re-break all these [C] fractures in my face
[Am] and then have them [C] reset. _
[Dm] _ And then I had a long recovery [Em] period
where I had a big nuclear [C] headache.
Adrian was okay.
She's a [Dm] real survivor, real tough.
She was great, but I had a pretty [G] bad headache for [C] a while.
_ I couldn't [Eb] play in a band, it [Bb] was too much, but I did,
_ I was [Ebm] writing some verse,
and I [Bb] took one of the verses _ [Fm] that I wrote
and sat at the piano, having [Bb] had a glass or two of [Gm] wine,
and wrote [Cm] Dancing in the Moonlight.
We like [Fm] our fun and we never [Bb] fight
You [Cm] can't [Gm] dance and [Eb] stay [Bb] uptight
[Cm] It's a _ supernatural [Fm] _ _ delight

_ [Eb] Freedom, [Gm] woman, [Cm] _ it's such [Fm] a fine natural [Bb] sight
Everybody, [Eb] _ dancing [Gm] in [Cm] the moonlight _
_ [Fm] And in it, I was just trying to envision a world
that [Eb] was a lot better than the [Cm] one I had experienced,
you [Fm] know, one in which people were getting along,
[Bb] people [Eb] weren't fighting, people [Bb] weren't [Cm] violent.
Everybody, _ [Fm] dancing in the moonlight

[Ab] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [Cm] _ I always felt that I was [Fm] rewarded
for taking this horrible bummer
and getting it up onto higher ground
_ _ and, you [Cm] know, celebrating the positive.
And I think that speaks to people.
[Fm] I think the [Bb] universe [F] enjoyed [Eb] my response.
_ [Bb] And [Cm] I certainly enjoyed the [Fm] universe's response.
Natural [Bb] sight, everybody
