G'day, it's Heath here from PickingLessons.com.
In this mandolin lesson we're going to take a look at a popular old gospel song, Will
the Circle be Unbroken.
We're going to take a look at 3 variations of how we can play it on the mandolin.
The first is a variation played in the open position, and it's just the basic melody.
This version [N] can be played easily in 2 other keys, both in D and in E, and we'll have a
chat about that a little bit later.
The second version is using the tremolo technique, and we're playing that in a movable pattern,
so it can be played in any key.
That's going to be in the second lesson of this video.
And in the third lesson we're going to take a look at another variation in the break,
a little bit more advanced, about an intermediate level, and it's using double stops.
And again, that's movable.
So first of all, let's take a look at a slow play through the open position break in A.
Basic melody played in the open position in the key of A.
[E] [D]
[G] [D]
[G] [D]
[G] [D] Okay, [Bm]
[E]
[D]
[A] [E]
[D] [G] [Eb]
[G]
[D] so you can see there we're using some open strings, using the open A, and we're
playing in the open position there.
Now that break can be played, obviously, in A, and our root note is the A string.
Now, if I was to start the break on string 4 instead, that is going to put us in the
key of D, so the open D string there.
If I was to start the break on the second [E] string, then I'm going to have the open E
string as my root note, and that's going to put us in the key of E.
So that open position [D] break is movable slightly into the three keys, and we have the open
D string as a root [G] note, or we have [E] the open A string as a root [D] note, [Bb] or the [E] open E string.
[Bb] So we have three keys we can play that break in.
Now, we have many more keys we can choose from, and you might find that somebody's going
to sing this in the key of G, or in the key of B, or whatever it might be.
So the next two breaks, we're going to take a look at how we can play these and move them
into different positions.
So if you head on over to www.pickandlessons.com, you're going to find the tab for all of these breaks.
You're going to find the second lesson, [B] which we're looking at the tremolo version of the
break, [Eb] and [D]
you'll also find the variation with the double stops.
[Gm]
[Ebm] [G] [N] We have three different double stop positions, and the pattern is movable.
So head on over to www.pickandlessons.com, you'll find the next video lessons, and the
tablature, and some play along tracks, so you can practice at a slower tempo as well.

Okay, so just to summarize what we've done in this video here, so we're using [E] this open
position break, it's just the basic melody.
[D] [Ebm] So very easy to [Db] play, all down strokes.
There's a lot of space between the notes, so make sure you're counting as you're playing
through it if you're unfamiliar with the tune.
Okay, head on over to www.pickandlessons.com, I'll see you there.
