My first exposure really to music is probably the Beach Boys music, of course.
My mom was a true music lover, so we used to listen to the music together [Dm] all the time.
We were immersed in music from the get-go.
We were just a [A] very musical family.
All the [Dm] leaves are brown, [C] [Bb] and [C] the sky [Am] [A] is gray.
[Bb]
I've been [F] [A] for a [Dm] while, [Bb] on a [A] winter's day.
Our new [Dm] record is called [C] Dedicated, and [Bb] we're so excited about it.
Coming off our [A] 20th anniversary, we thought it would be just [D] a real honorable [Dm] thing to do for our [C] parents.
We are [Bb] covering our parents' [C] music, some obscure [A] songs and some very obvious hits.
These are such celebrated songs, [Dm] and just [C] classic songs.
[Bb] I [C] passed along [A] the way.
[A] [Bb]
[F] [A] [Dm] We [Bb] just decided [A] that it would be really special to be able to put our [Dm] little signature [C] on the songs.
We knew it was going to be a challenge to do it, but we thought, [A] we have to do this.
California [Dm] dreaming, [C] [Bb] [C] on such a [A] winter's day.
[Ebm] I love the colorful [Gb] clothes she wears, [Bbm] and the [Ab] way the sunlight [Abm] glaze upon her [Bb] hair.
I've been on stage since I was a little girl.
[Ebm] We used to go up, Uncle Carl would [Db] give us our cue on Good Vibrations, and in the nanananana [Abm] section, that was it.
Wendy and I used to [Bb] introduce the Beach Boys.
It was so cute, [Eb] two little kids getting up [Gb] there.
I'm picking up good vibrations, she's giving me excitations.
I'm picking up good vibrations, she's giving me [B] excitations.
It [Ab] was pretty easy for us [Ab] to choose which songs we wanted to go on the record.
We thought, let's give [Db] people some hits, [Bb] some definite [Eb] hit records that are uplifting and fun, [Bb] like Fun Fun Fun,
[Eb]
[Bb] Wouldn't It Be Nice, and [Ebm] California Dreamin'.
But let's also record [Bbm] songs that are a little more on the artistic side, a little [Abm] left of center.
It was just incredible [Bb] to sing the parts that they sing.
When they recorded it in the 60s, they would do one or two takes, and they would be done.
We really [Bbm] respect how good they were.
The music is what [Abm] is inspiring.
These songs, the lyrics, [Bb] the melodies, the harmonies, [Db] all of it, both groups, [Gbm] provide that.
[F] It's like a given.
[Db]
[Ab]
Monday, Monday.
When it comes down to it, with the Beach Boys and the Mamas and Papas, what really stands out and what you remember are those harmonies.
I was always really obsessed with harmony from about 11 years old.
I started to study [Gb] the Beach Boys in particular and the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.
I could not [B] get enough of harmony, and I would [Abm] gather all my friends around [B] and make [Abm] everybody try to [Eb] sing [Ab] these songs.
[Eb] Carnie plays a big role [Ab] in the vocal arrangements, and she [Ab] does it brilliantly.
We love to harmonize.
It's when we feel the most at peace and the [B] most whole.
We are meant to sing together, and it's comforting and it's [Eb] beautiful, and it's, you know, [Ab] it just feels right.
How could you leave and not take me?
[Eb] I [Cm] would say my favorite song on the record is God [Gm] Only Knows.
Not only because [C] I think it's a brilliant [F] song, it's always been one of my favorite Beach Boys songs,
but [Db] just the arrangements with the harmonies and the [B] backgrounds, it took that [Bb] song to a different level.
God [F] only knows what I'd be [Gm] without you.
I hope that people who listen [Dm] to Dedicated really [Ab] are able to sort of take a walk down [Bb] memory lane
and be able [Ab] to sort of recapture [Eb] some of those feelings [Fm] that were so much a part of maybe their [Cm] own history.
I hope first and [A] foremost that people listen to it and it [Bb] makes them feel great, you know,
just [Gb]
touches their heart [Bb] and [E] makes them want to sing.
I [Eb] hope it means as much to them as it does [Bb] to us because it really [Cm] has deep meaning.
[Eb] Such history with this [Cm] record, these songs, it's our [Gm] lives.
These songs, [C] this is our childhood, [F] this is the story of our lives, it's our family.
So [G] I think there is great [B]
integrity and [Bb] authenticity here.
We're not just [F] some band covering these songs.
[Gm] We are the children of the people that wrote and did these songs and I'm really proud [A] of that.
