And I promise I won't just continue to ask you about the people that you know and have worked with but Daniel Johnston being another
One how did you come to meet Daniel Johnston?
I was a fan of his for ages and ages because that tape city was putting out
yep, that sort of circulated them through musicians and I
Heard so there's some mutual friends that you know be careful, you know, he's kind of hard to work with
so I
being frightened
Of him basically I asked my mother I had a phone number for West Virginia somewhere
They were living in West Virginia Daniel and Mabel and his his daddy Bill
So I got Mike I convinced my mother to call this number.
So I was afraid to then
She ended up talking to Mabel for ages
and then my mother and Daniel's mother Mabel became fast pen pals and wrote each other for
They probably communicated for like 10 years before Daniel and I ever met face to face
So when she first cold called him, it was like hi, I'm Mark's ma and I'm calling you because whatever.
Yeah
I guess they just started, you know talking about their sons and just they started this
Correspondence that lasted for years.
That is so cool
So the first time when you met when you met Daniel was it in the studio?
Yeah face to face
And no, I I don't know because prior again having like the cassette stuff and all the stuff that was sort of circulating around
I don't know how much time he spent in a in a studio like the like traditional sense of going in to make a record
What so did you approach it differently then?
yeah, I I approached it the only way that I really knew how was and that was to
really just to get him to
To do as many songs as he had to just record him
Singing and playing piano simultaneously because that's what he does.
He can't do one of the other separately
Okay, so I just tracked [E] all these songs that he had and [B] and built on that
So a lot of the stuff a lot of the [F] orchestration
On that record was done after I sent him home
Had you seen the documentary at this point?
No, I still have you still haven't maybe you shouldn't I don't know
You have your own version in your head.
I guess do you have do you have reoccurring dreams?
Mm-hmm.
What are yours?
Yeah, um
The northern territories of Canada and I'm flying [F#] over the northern [F] territories in there
Um, I don't but I don't see it as land.
I see it as you would see a map
Are you in a plane or are you flying?
It's me flying.
Uh-huh
