[Em] [C] So, I'm going to start with the
What is the a person?
[D] [Em]
I have to take a look at one of my all-time favorite songs by really one of my [G#m] all-time favorite songwriters
Year of the Cat, Al Stewart, written by Al and Peter Wood
and of course from the album that really as far as the rest of the world was concerned put Al on the map
the Year of the Cat album, fantastic album, [Em] things like Broadway [C] Hotel
[Em] [F#m] on the back of the album, there's a little bit of a song called The Cat, which is a song that I wrote
[C#m] [D] Anyhow, some great tunes, if you don't have it, get it
So, I just want to take a really campfire look at Year of the Cat, an easy way to strum it
I'll show you a little bit, I'll show you some of those little licks that I put in there
[F] It's basically in the key of E minor and I've got a chart there that has the chord progression and the words
So, if you can sing it, I might try singing it, I don't know, we'll see [G#] how it goes, we'll see how this lesson evolves
But the main couple of chords you have to get the hang [B] of are C major 7, [C] which is just played as a C chord
[G] leaving the open, the second string open, [C] so that you have a B in it
Now that [G] same B is going to be [E] left open on the D [Bm] chord, making it a D6
[Em] So I'm playing my C major 7 as a normal C chord with my first [E] finger off
Then the D6 could be a normal D chord with your [C] finger on the second string off as well
Now, because [G] of that, I prefer to play that with my second and third fingers
and then just [Em] use those same two fingers to get to E minor
So that's the main theme that happens in this song, C major 7, [Bm] D6, and [Em] E minor
And if you can squeeze it into the strumming, this cool little lick that is really done on the piano
is done at [G] the 7th fret of the first string, hitting it as a down in the middle of the strum
hammering on from B to C, [C#] 7th to the 8th fret, [F#] and pulling it right back off
[E] catching the 8th fret of the second string, [C#] the G, on the up, and then [Em] an open E on the down
[Bm]
[Em]
[Bm] That's what it sounds like slowly
[Em]
Notice I'm getting to [C#m] the E minor on an [Em] up
Down, down, [Bm] up, down, up, [E] down, [Em] up
Let's
[E] try a little sing [C]-along with You're the Cat
You're going to have to sing loud to drown me out
A [Em] little high for me
