G'day guys, I'm gonna do my best to try and show you how you can play Neil [C] Young's Cowgirl in the Sand.
It's a bit hard to do Neil Young tutorials [Ab] because he plays things differently so often.
Watch two or three different covers of this and you'll play it slightly differently every time with his releases and so forth.
But I'm just gonna try and give you the very basics.
[N] The song, the acoustic version of this song is actually tuned down a full step.
I haven't worried about doing that for the tutorial because I know most of you guys won't have your [E] guitars tuned down.
So we'll just do it in standard tuning, [Am] okay?
Now, the chords, the main chords for the intro verse are A [F] minor and F, [Am] or F major synth.
Okay?
But with Neil's interesting strum, [Ab] he's doing that attacking down stroke with the muted, with the palm [Am] muting.
[Fm] And then his upstrokes are [G] often just grabbing.
[Am] So,
[F]
[Am]
[F]
[Am]
I'm not quite sure how, exactly how I can show you how to do [D] that other than just to keep [Ab] practicing it.
It will just slowly start unfolding for you.
[Am] Now, on the A minor, the releasing is essentially just taking your first finger off the second string, on and off.
So, and on [F] the F, it's basically releasing the third string.
Okay?
[Am]
[F]
Alright, it's not exactly like that [G] but it's roughly, [Ab] like Neil obviously throws a lot more stuff in there which I don't know how to do it.
But that's [Gm] kind of where you want [Am] to start.
[F] [Am]
And then you keep that up for the first two lines of the first verse.
[F]
[Am]
[F]
Next [C] chord's a C, [G] G, [F]
[G] F, and back to G twice, and then a little run in between, so I'll just show [C] you.
[G] [F]
[G]
That strumming there kind of [C] just goes a bit more ordinary.
[G] [F]
[G] Then what he does is, [B] [G] which is just while you're still in your G, play the sixth string on the third fret, [A]
open fifth, [B] second fret on the fifth, [C] strum into the C.
[G]
[F] [G]
[C] [G]
[D] [F] [G]
[Bm]
[Dm] [Em]
[C] [F] The
[Am] chord he's [Dm] playing here is a D minor 7.
Now, in my cover I played a D minor, and then I looked more closely at what he was doing and I saw he was actually playing a D minor 7.
[Em]
To E minor.
[C]
C.
[F] D.
[Am] F.
And [G] again.
[Dm]
[Em] [C]
[F] [Gb] Just sit on a D minor now for a bit [Bm] longer.
[Dm]
[G] [C]
[F] Okay, [Am]
now he does a [D] little lead run.
[C] [G]
So that's on the first string, fretting the third fret, and you're going [C] to slide up to the fifth,
[D] slide back down to the [G] third and hit.
Open [Gb] first.
[Em] Second string now on the [D] third, [G] second string on the [C] first.
[Gb] [Fm] [G]
[A] [Em]
[D] [C] [G]
[C]
[G] [E]
[F] Two down strokes on an F.
[C] Down on the C.
[F]
[C] And on the C, [D] [C] you're going to do [D] a release of the fourth string, [G] hammer on to the fourth, and then play the third.
[C]
[Am]
[G] [F] [C]
[G]
Two down strokes on an [E] E7.
[F] F.
[G] And then to the G.
Before you go back into your kind of intro riff again.
[Abm] [C] The [D] muted [C] [G] [F]
[C]
[E] [F] [G]
[Am] [F]
[Ab] down strokes start again, that's slightly different [Cm] strum, [G] slightly slower.
So [Ab] let me just go right [D] back [Dm] now to the chorus and I'll just go through very [Ab] slowly.
[Dm] It's not [D] [Em] enough now [C] to change [F] your mind
[Dm] When so many [Em] love you [C] is at [G] [F] your side
[Dm] It's a woman in you that makes you [C] want to play [F] the strings
[D]
[Am] [G] [F]
[C] [E]
[F] [G]
[Am]
[F] [G]
[F] Does a lovely [G] bend in one cover I saw on [N] the first string on the third fret.
[Am]
He also sometimes throws the pinky in there on the second string third fret.
[D] [Am] Before he comes back to the A minor.
[F]
[Cm] Mix it up, you know, that's what he does.
[Fm] He does a lot of other [N] stuff which I've got no idea what he's doing but they're essentially the basics, the fundamentals of what he [Am] does.
[F] [Eb]
[G] [Am]
[F]
And then he does a whole lot again for the next [Am] verse, and then a whole lot again for verse three.
[Ab] So that's the whole song and right at the end [A] it finishes on an A sus 2.
A sus 2 strum.
[E] So yeah, I don't think there's anything more to show you for that.
I think you can pick it all up from that.
I know that was a little bit everywhere, it's a bit hard to show you [Cm] every single pluck and what have you with that song.
So it's one of those ones that you kind of just have to mess around with yourself.
So they're the bones of it and I hope you can figure it out from there.
So, bye.
