"To Love Somebody" Guitar Lesson (Ray Lamontagne / Bee Gees Song). chords
Start Jamming...
There's a light, [Am] a certain kind of light, [C] that never [G] shone on me.
[N] Hey folks, here is [Gm] a lesson on a fantastic song [G] called To Love Somebody, which is an
acoustic song originally by the Bee Gees, but [E] made popular again recently by Ray LaMontagne.
[Em]
I'm going to take [N] sides as to which version is better.
I like them both, they're great acoustic songs.
And it's actually pretty easy to play.
The only barre chord is [F] an F.
That's the major barre chord.
[E]
And [F] if you can play an open F, that's fine [C] too.
[Eb] But I like the [E] barre chord F because of the chunky sound that you get in the song.
So first of all, we'll go through the chords.
[G] Pretty simple, we've got a [D] G,
[E] an A [Am] minor, A as in apple, minor, [G] [F] F,
[C] C, [D] and a D.
So some [N] pretty simple chords there.
And I always say, don't worry too much about the strumming pattern because [Em] you need to
think about [Em] your chords and the chord changes first, and the strumming will come later [N] when
you're more relaxed.
But if you really want to have a pattern to work with, the [D] [G]
pattern is going to be down,
down, [F] down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up.
So down, down, and then for double speed, down, [E] up, down, up, [Bb] down, up, down, up.
I hope that's not too complicated.
Again, [G] I don't worry too much about strumming when [Bb] I'm trying to learn a song.
I can always [G] just strum just [C] downward at first and then gradually from there.
[N] So this is the way the song breaks down.
We start on a G, G major, [G]
and it starts on, there's a light, there's a A [Bbm] minor.
So we go from [G] G, there's a light, stay on G, [Am] A minor, certain kind of light,
C.
[C] Never [G] shown on G, me, [F]
I want my [G] life's a G, me, lived with [D] D, you, [C] lived with C, you,
back to G, [G] there's a G way, [Am] A minor, everybody say, [Ab]
[C] C.
Do each and [G] every G, little thing, [F] that's what [B] does a [G] G thing, if I ain't got [D] D, you,
if I ain't [C] got C.
[G] The chorus on G, G.
You don't know what is [D] D like, baby, [C] C.
You don't know [G] what is G like, love [D] some D buddy, [C] love some C buddy, when [G] I'm G-ing you.
[Eb] And here's something I do to kind of mix the song up.
It's [G] got a pretty, [Eb]
[Bb] kind of almost like a, [G] well, it's a very heavy acoustic chunking sound.
So I mix up my G chord [E] with the [G] G bar chord.
You don't have to do that if you're kind of new to guitar, just stay on the open G.
For the second verse, I start on G, on the bar version, just to kind of keep things fresh.
So, verse two.
In my brain, on G, G, [B] [Am] A minor.
See your face again, C.
[C] I know [G] my frame of G, my hon,
[Bb] [F] doubt it, doubt it.
I'm blind, [E] so, so G [G] blind.
C on G.
I'm a man, [Am] A minor.
Can't you see what I am?
[D] [C] C.
I live and [G] breathe for G, you.
[Bb] [F] Half again.
What good [G] does it do if I ain't [D] got D, ain't [C] got C.
Back in the chorus.
[G]
Start on G.
You don't G know what it's be [D] like.
Baby, see, [C] you don't know what it's be like.
[D] Love some D, buddy.
Love [C] some C, buddy.
The way [G] I love you.
And the chorus goes twice, so go once more to the chorus.
Chorus, G.
You don't know [D] what it's be like.
[C] See, you don't know what it's [G] be like.
Love [D] some D, buddy.
See [C] some B, buddy.
[G] The way I G love you.
[Em]
And that, [N] my friends, is the whole song.
It's a great tune.
[G] Relax, have fun, and we'll see you soon.
