Hi YouTubers, Keith Smart here.
Have you ever wondered what the opening chord is
to A Hard Day's Night?
Randy Backman recently had access to the original
master tapes from A Hard Day's Night and he discovered the three key components
of the amazing chord.
John Lennon on his Rickenbacker 325 [G] played [A] Dsus4, [B]
that's a
normal D [G] chord with a G on the top E string.
I haven't got a Rickenbacker [N] 325
so I'm playing it on this Fender Telecaster.
So this is the first chord.
[D]
I'm just going straight into a small studio here, no effects just a tiny bit
of reverb.
[N] So the first part of the chord to A Hard Day's Night was John playing
Dsus4 on his Rickenbacker.
Next we have Paul [B] McCartney on a Hofner
violin bass [F] playing the note D.
I haven't got a Hofner violin bass so I'm
playing on a [G] Burns New Sonic bass.
So here's Paul's [D] bit.
[Dm]
[N] John Lennon played
Dsus4 on his Rickenbacker 325.
Paul played the note of D on his Hofner
violin bass and George Harrison on a 360 12-string played the chord [F] of F.
He
added a G note on the top E and he also added a G [N] on the bottom E.
So this is
George's part.
[C]
So
[G]
[N] I've recorded those three components let's hear what they
sound like together.
