So welcome to Words and Music.
This song in 1967, but it was a top five hit for Nina Simone two years later.
This song is called To Love Somebody.
We wrote it about March 1967, and it was originally written for Otis Redding.
Otis Redding was the leading soul singer of that period and our favourite vocalist at the time.
And I got to meet him in New York and he asked us to write a song for him.
And we conceived this [B] particular song.
Unfortunately, Otis Redding died three months later and never got to record the song.
So we recorded it ourselves.
But as fate would have it, so did an awful lot of other people.
Yeah.
Jimmy Somerville's done it, Janis Joplin.
Yeah, over the years Michael Bolton was the last person.
So there's been at least 200 cover versions on this particular song.
Three of which you just mentioned.
Three of which we've just mentioned, yes.
We mentioned the other 200, but there probably isn't time.
Yeah.
[A]
There's a light, [Bm] a certain kind of light
[D] That never [A] shone on me
I
[G] want my [A] light to be
[E] Live with you, [D] live with
[A] There's a way, [Bm] everybody says
[D] To do each and [A] every little thing
But [G] what good [A] does it bring
If I ain't [E] got you
If I ain't [D] got you
Baby, [A] you don't know what it's like
Baby, [D] you don't know what it's [A] like
[E] To love somebody
To love [D] somebody
The way [A] I love you
[G]
[D] [A]
In my brain
I [Bm] see your face [D] again
And [A] my brain, my mind
[G] You ain't got to [A] be so blind
[E] And I'm blind
[D] So, so bad
[A] I'm a bad
You [Bm] see what I am
[D] I live and I [A] breathe for you
[G] But what good [A] does it do
If I [E] ain't got you
If I [D] ain't got you
You [A] don't know what [E] it's like
[D] Baby, you don't know what [A] it's like
To [E] love somebody
To [D] love somebody
The way I love [A] you
