[Am] [C]
[F] [C]
[Am] Okay, [G] [C]
[F] [C]
[Am] [C]
[Eb]
so Billy in the Low Ground is in C, C major.
And before we get started with the tune, let's take a look at some double stops.
Here's an easy one to start with.
We have our G string, and we have our E on the D string.
[Em] I'm putting a little vibrato on that.
Let's call that our first double [Abm] stop.
Now we're going to add in a finger to the G string.
We're going to add in our root note.
This is the C, and this is with your third finger.
So I'm going to kind of hide my first finger here, but you'll see.
It's a two-finger double stop, the G and the D string.
[C] [Em] So right there, we have two right off the bat.
Our first one, [C] and our second one.
Okay, let's move to our middle two strings.
Let's do two on this one.
We're going to leave that E there in its position.
We're going to add that C, our root note, in that low two position.
Okay, let's break off.
We're going to get away from this E.
You might as well leave it down, though, just for strengthening and practice purposes.
And we're going to add in our third finger.
This is the G on the D string.
[N] So now we're going to be playing a G and a C.
Okay, there it is.
Try sliding around, moving around.
If you're having tuning issues, you need to start one at a time, each note at a time.
So make sure you find that G.
Here's a good way to find a good G.
[G]
Check it with your octave, low G.
Move it around accordingly if you're too sharp.
Move it down if you're too flat.
Move it up.
So there's a good G.
Leave it there.
Now try to find that C.
[C] [Bm] [C]
That double stop there, which we'll call our fourth double stop for our purposes, is the one we're going to use just to come out of this tune just for our lesson today.
Let's take a look at the A and the E string.
Now, there's some trickier double stops for the key of C here.
Let's take our C, and let's just play an open E.
So I have nothing on the E string, it's just ringing out.
I'm playing a C natural on the A string.
One other one, this is kind of tricky, you're going to play a fifth.
A C and a G together.
I use this a lot in the second part.
So that would be 5 and 6.
So we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
And then back down.
[Em] [Gm] [G] So it's a good idea to get familiar with these double stops.
You're going to use a lot of them in your playing in this tune.
Alright, let's take a look at the first couple of notes.
If you're familiar with the C scale, this should be no problem.
If you're having trouble remembering a C scale where you start with the third finger, here you need to review some scales.
It's the same as a G scale, really.
[B] [C] So this tune follows the scale, it's very major.
So we start off with a little pickup.
And that's going to be our open G, an A and a B.
And I play this all in one bow, giving it a [D] triplet effect.
And
[Fm] you keep running that bow into your downbeat, the C.
And we play C, B, C.
[B] [C] [Dm] [G] [Gb] [A]
Let's just rest there for a minute.
So that's C, B, C.
[B] [C]
[D] That's [Em] D, E, G.
And [Bm] then A, B, C.
[D] [C]
[D] [G] [C]
1, [Bb] 2, [Am] 3, 4.
[B] [C] [G]
[C] And again.
[G] [C] Okay, [G] so you can see you're covering a lot of notes very quickly across that scale in that octave.
Let's try it with the pickup.
So I'll count us in like this.
1, 2, 3.
[D] [C] [G]
[Cm] 1, 2, 3.
[Bm] [C] [G]
[C] One more time.
1, 2, 3.
[G] [Cm] Okay, let's just get to the end of this measure here.
We continue on with a G.
[D]
[C] [Am] [Em]
Okay, and that's all very C-like formation for fiddle [Cm] players right there.
Again, basing it off this double stop.
[D]
[Db] [Am] Now, the next bit of the tune we have coming up is actually over an A minor.
So what happens nicely here is, and I'm getting ahead of myself a bit, but no problem,
you're going to play an E and an A together.
[D] And you have a really nice A minor double stop there.
So let me show you what this sounds like.
1, 2, 3.
[C] [G] 1, [Cm]
[F] [Em] [B] 2, 3.
[C]
[G] [Cm] 1, [F] [Em]
2, 3.
[B] [C] [G]
