Doobie Brothers Black Water.
I want to take a look here at a basic version kind of a campfire version of just strumming through it
So we're not going into the picking in this version
But this is we're mostly just we're playing all the chords exactly the way you would if you were
Gonna work on the finger picking version
But a lot of times I like students to learn the chord progression first and get this down
So [Gb] this lesson is just going to be what I would consider the basic version [Db] of Black [D] Water
Again, we're in double drop detuning not again.
We're in double drop detuning
So what you have to do in the double drop detuning is make sure that your first string and your [Ab] sixth string are tuned down to D
Then we have very easy fingerings for all of these chords the A minor
What's being called A minor 11 in [F] the song is really a standard A minor 7 chord with your first finger on the second string
At the first fret and your second finger on the fourth fret of the fourth string.
We're just gonna [Am] strum this
And then [D] I guess I'll tell you about the other chord [A] first
So it's A minor 11 and D now the [Bb] D chord is played leaving the [G] first string open
But we're going so we're only use two fingers on our D chord your first finger on the in the and third finger in the normal
Place where they'd be for a D chord and when we try to do this now with strumming all we have [Am] to do is
[D]
We have to get a little bit [F] of swing to it and keep the bass
Make sure that we get the bass note clean on the first beat so that's what my A minor 11 to D sounds [Am] like
[D] [A]
Bass down [D] and a very light down following that [C] down up down [A] up
[Am] [D]
Very regular [F] changes A minor 11 to D.
Just going just on the changing on the first beat every [Bb] time
Eight [F] sets of those or eight measures worth of those is well
No, 16 measures worth really [Am] [D] is what it takes for [A] one verse
[Am] So [D] we need 16 measures in a verse where [F] it's going A minor 11 D A minor 11 D
That's one line then we get into the chorus our G chord is played with [G] two notes at the fifth fret
Fifth fret of the sixth string with your third [F] finger and fifth fret of the first string with your [G] fourth finger
Same strumming pattern hit the bass note bass down down up down up two measures of the G
Moving to B flat so for this B flat chord you can take your little finger off
Slide [F] your third finger up to the eighth fret
Sixth string [E] your fourth finger goes to the same fret the eighth [Bb] fret of the fourth string
Your second [Ab] finger goes to the next string the second [F] the third string at the seventh [Bb] fret
And your first finger goes to the sixth fret of the second string and you leave the first string open
So that line happens three [D] times in the [G] chorus
[Bb]
[G]
[Bb] [G] Three sets of those and after the three of them now we get to [Bb] a part
Stop hitting bass notes
We're gonna play this a [D] chord with your first finger [F] barring four strings at the second fret
[A]
And we only want to hear this chord for three beats one two and three and on [G] the fourth beat
We want to get to E minor seven the way we're gonna finger this E minor seven is with two fingers on the [D] sixth and
Fifth strings at the second fret so it's [A] fingered like a normally minor except one string lower
towards the ceiling and
Syncopated the strumming has to happen on [Ab] the fourth beat and that means you take a rest on the first beat of the next [D] measure Hey
[A] So [E]
[G] when you hit that chord on beat [A] four one two three [G] four one two three [A] four one
two three [D] four one two three
[A] [G] Eight measures of that there's the eighth of seventh and the eighth
[D]
Then we keep the same rhythm going and we go to D and A minor 11 with the exact same rhythm
[D]
four measures then back to the [A] A E minor [Em] seven
[D]
[E] And then [D] hit the last A and stop [A] and now you're ready to get [Dbm] back into the other section of the [E] song
[Em] [D]
[Am] [D]
I'll do two more of those and then run through [D] the whole chorus one more time
Less narration here comes our D chord
[G]
B [Bb] flat
back to [G] G
[Bb]
Third [G] time
[Bb] Here comes our A to E minor seven with the [A] syncopated part [G]
[G]
[A] [G]
[A] D part [D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
one more [A] set of the A parts
[Bm]
[G] [A] [E] [G]
[A] [N] so that's all you have to do to play this basic version of Blackwater get in the double drop detuning and
Work on those two strumming patterns one where you're hitting a bass note on the first beat and the other one
Where we're syncopating it by changing chords on beat four of the first measure before for the chord change so
I [F] have a more detailed version of this much more detail that shows all [Bb] the picking
[Am] [D]
[A] [D] [G]
[Bb]
[G] So that is available
In the target program, so I encourage you to check [F] that out
But in the meantime, I hope you get the hang of this and enjoy playing the basic version of Blackwater
