[N] Hi, this is Joe [D] Bonamassa and welcome [Ab] to Bonna Jam tracks.
Tracks that are designed to help improve your blues and rock guitar playing, all done in the [Bb] style of the original recordings.
Today [F] we're going to talk about a song that kind of put me on [B] the map.
It's the Ballad [C] of John Henry.
Originally [Cm] when we did the Ballad of John Henry, we recorded it in the key of B.
[Gb] Two [E] reasons.
One, it [Gb] sounded heavier down there.
And [Bb] two, I couldn't sing very high at that point.
This was almost a decade ago.
[D] And that was pretty much at the top of my range.
So as [Ab] we kind of kept playing the song and having to do these [Cm] shows that [C] required us to fly into crazy places around the [D] globe,
I grew tired of carrying [A] [C] [Bb] the B guitar for one [C] song, so decided to move it up [E] to E.
[F] And today we're [B] going to talk about the version that I've been doing in E for, [C] quite frankly, [A] longer than the original.
[Gb] So [Em] the riff is
[E]
[G] [A] [E]
[Em] [E] [G]
[A] And if you're going to solo over that, [B] very, very simple.
[D] It's E [Bm] pentatonic, you know.
[G]
[Em] [G] [A]
[D] [Em]
[G] [Em]
[A] [Em]
[Dm] [G] [E]
And that would be [Am] the verse section.
What you're also [Bm] going to hear [Bb] is that kind [Dm] of diminished minor, whatever [B] they call it.
[C] [A]
The bridge.
[B]
[C] [A]
Now if you really want to get [Bb] fun, I [A] do this live a lot.
Sometimes I put this [Bb] major third in.
[C] It's kind of a fun [Bb] clash, but it gets [A] a rise out of some of the band [B] members.
[C] [A]
What you don't [C] want to do is stick the landing on the A, so it will not sound good if you [B] do this.
[A] That [Bbm] wouldn't be proper [A] etiquette for anybody.
And to solo [Gb] over that, [F] you'd move up [B] to B.
[A]
[F] [E] [B]
[Gb] [Bm] [E] [A]
[Db] But I generally don't solo over that.
[Bb] And [Db] the main solo section in the [B] song is this [E] pulse.
[Em] [E]
So how I would suggest soloing over [C] that would be, [D] basically, you start low [Em] and end up high.
[E]
[G]
[Em] [D]
[Em] [Bm] [E]
[C] [D] [Em]
[E] [G]
[E]
[G]
[E] And live what I [B] do is sometimes I mess with the [Bb] harmonics [E] underneath, just over the pulse.
[Bm] I go down to D, you know.
And then I [E] go [D] up [Em]
[D] [E] to [A] [G]
A.
It's almost kind of [A] a trick out of the old white snake playbook.
[F] But basically that pulse gives you a nice blank [Bb] palette in which to paint over.
And you can do basically [D] anything.
[Em]
So [Bb] it's a great [C] track to jam along to, [Eb] improve your playing, [C] and experiment.
Throw some effects on there, [Bb]
[Gb] do some dive bombs [G] if you want.
[Bb]
It doesn't matter.
[A] I have a 5-speed transmission on this.
Anyway, thank you very much for watching.
[Db] And I hope [Bb] this track proves valuable to your [G] playing and enjoyable to just sit around in your room [D] and woodshed.
Thank you [Gb] very much.
