[F] Hey friends, welcome [Bb] to the New Song Cafe at worshiptogether.com.
Today is my guest, a good South African friend, Brenton Brown.
He's going to be sharing his new song, Everlasting God.
[N] So Brenton, welcome to New Song Cafe.
This is a little bit of a role reversal here.
I'm getting to host you and you have one of the most amazing songs I have heard in forever.
I was on the bus on this tour with Matt Redmond in the Scrabble Tour and we were doing this
tour and I was like, Matt, you always kind of know songs I don't know.
Is there any songs out there that you know of that you could show me, like some new worship songs?
And he goes, there's this one song by a guy named Brenton Brown.
I was like, yeah, I know who that Brenton is.
And he's like, you've got to hear this song.
And it's called Everlasting God.
And he played it for me on the bus.
I mean, I flipped.
I played it every day, almost every day.
And I was like, gosh, this song is incredible.
And I love this song, even recording it myself.
Thanks to you.
Thanks for letting me do that.
But I want you to show the people this song and tell me a little bit about the song, maybe
how it was written.
Well, it started about four years ago, just at a band retreat, like a worship leader retreat.
And we were tired and we were just going to pray before bedtime.
And we brought along some percussion instruments just for a laugh.
And we started kind of playing the percussion and just praying to God and asking Him to
be with us on the weekend.
And that little phrase, strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord, popped out.
And then a friend of Jude and I came down to London, a guy called Ken Riley, and played
this pre-chorus.
And I thought, wow, that's a neat pre-chorus.
I wonder if it might fit with the verse.
We put it together.
And by that stage, my wife and I, Jude, had just contracted chronic fatigue syndrome.
And that chapter, the verse comes from Isaiah 40, is an amazing chapter of promise and hope
for those who wait on God that strength will rise and that we will be lifted up and strengthened by Him.
And so it kind of became a mission of mine to finish the song.
I was like, this is our theme song.
This is our anthem song.
And so that's where it comes from.
Why don't you play a little bit of it?
[Bb] [Eb] [C] [Eb]
[Bb] [Eb] [Bb]
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord.
[Eb] We will [Bb] wait upon the Lord.
[Eb] We will [Bb] wait upon the Lord.
Strength will rise as we wait upon the [Eb] Lord.
We will wait [Bb] upon the Lord.
We [Bb] will wait upon the [Eb] Lord.
Oh God, [Bb] [Eb] you [Bb] reign [F] forever
[Bb] [Eb] Our hope, [Bb] our strong [Gm] [F] deliverer
[Bb] You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint, [Eb] you won't [F] grow [Bb] weary
You're the defender of the weak
You comfort those in need
You lift us up on wings like eagles
That's going to be a massive song.
It's just
[F] got it.
What's really, really cool about the song is that guitar hook.
I love it.
You know, so many worship songs just like, alright, just play G and just go.
[Bb] And it's got actually a great guitar hook.
It's got a signature.
As soon as you hear it, you're like, I know that song.
Oh, that's encouraging to hear.
Yeah, show people how you're going to do that.
Because you cannot do this song without playing this hook.
Right.
Yeah, this is kind of where the song started.
It was just that.
Dun, dun, dun, [Eb] dun, dun.
[Bb] [C] [Eb] Yeah, slow it down a little bit.
[Bb] It's all happening here in the G shape.
So you don't really kind of need to move out of the G shape.
And I'm just playing like an open D there.
So I'm going G.
[Eb]
[D] And that's kind of [Eb] like a G, F, B, D, or [Abm] C.
And then I tend [Bb] to hit the.
[D] [Eb] [Bb]
[C] [Eb] [Bb]
Yeah, I actually kind of learned it myself actually.
And I'm glad you like it because when we started recording, I was like, wow, this is kind of weird.
In fact, I had a total panic.
I thought, man, I've never heard this before.
Maybe this is a stupid idea.
But it kind of just ended up staying.
So it's really just the melody for the verse.
That's what it is.
It's great.
And then it's got the little pre-chorus.
How does that?
So it's just G over B to C.
And I'm doing the Chris Tomlin lock in.
I've got my pinky and my ring finger locked in on the third fret of the B string and the E string.
And I'm not moving them.
Just my.
That's how I play the E, I [G] guess.
[F] And then the D.
[Bb] So it's G over B to C.
G over B to C.
D, E.
[F] And then back to the D again.
And then the chorus is super [Bb] simple, just three chords.
It's the G shape.
You are the everlasting God.
To the C shape.
The [Gm] everlasting God.
You do not [Bb] faint.
You won't grow weary.
And this little thumb over here is basically just folded over the top of the neck.
And it's meeting the E string.
So you can kind of strum without having to think too hard about which strings you're hitting.
And that's, I guess, the size of the song.
[N] Yeah.
Fantastic, man.
Thanks for being with us today on This Song Cafe.
Thanks for [Bb] having me.
You are the everlasting [Eb] God.
The everlasting [Gm] God.
You do not faint.
You [Eb] [F]
