Hi,
[F] [B] I'm Brenton Brown and you're watching WorshipTogether.com's New Song Cafe.
[Dbm] Today we have in the studio Chris Tomlin and some of his band and they'll be singing a
song called Jesus [B] Messiah.
So Chris, you've got a song, a new song on the record called Jesus Messiah.
Right, and we've been working on this new record for a bit now, I'm very excited about
it and this was a song that Daniel has been writing tons of songs and from time to time
I'll say, Ben, I'd love to hear some of your new stuff and so he'll come over to the house
and we'll just play some ideas that he has and then just, it kind of happens, then I
pick up on something and this chorus he played me and I was like, man that is amazing and
he had this kind of verse idea and we just started sitting at the piano and the guitar
and just kind of coming together like that.
So I think it's a powerful song, it's called Jesus Messiah and yeah, we'll just play it
for you a little bit of it.
Sweet, sweet.
I've always been, one of the interesting things is I've been looking for a way to use that
word Messiah in a song, it's not used a lot.
Right, we don't sing it really.
And I think it's a beautiful word and what it says about Jesus and who he is and so finally
after several tries, [Bb] we finally found a place to put it in the right place.
[Cm]
[C] [F]
[Cm] [F]
[Eb] [Bb]
[F] [Eb] [F]
[C] Jesus [Bb] Messiah, name [Gm] above all [C] names.
[Bb] Blessed Redeemer, [F] Emmanuel.
The rescue for sinners, [Bb] the ransom [Gm] from [C] heaven.
Jesus [Bb] Messiah, [F]
Lord of all.
[Cm] All I hope [Bb] is in you, [G] [Eb] all I hope [F] is in you.
[Cm] All the glory [Bb] to you God, [Eb] [G] the light of the world.
All [Cm] I hope [Bb] is in [G] you, all [Eb] I hope is in [F] you.
[Cm] All the glory [Bb] to you God,
[C] the [F] light of the world.
It just kind of goes back into that, kind of ramps back up.
You can take it in different places, bring the band back up. Jesus Messiah.
Or just kind of really just take it in a softer place.
Jesus Messiah, name above [Bb] all names.
It's really declaring a lot of things about Jesus, he's a rescue for sinners, a ransom
from heaven, all these different things about who he is.
Yeah I could see singing that song towards the middle of the set where our hearts are
a little bit more focused and we've sung the praise and we're ready to talk to the Lord
maybe a little bit more intimately then.
That's beautiful.
There's a couple of interesting things about this song as far as playing it.
One is it is the most interesting probably that I've written, that we've written together,
verse, the way the verse comes in.
It just doesn't really even feel like a verse.
It's so interesting the way it's, I guess the structure of it.
It just starts with this walk up, this G, in the G position.
I'm playing in B flat.
We recorded it in the key of B just a half step up.
[Cm] But it's,
[Gm] He who sinned and knew no [Bb] sin, that we might [Eb] become his [Bb] righteousness.
He humbled himself [Cm] and carried the cross.
And then this chord comes out of nowhere.
It's a one over five, which is in this position would be a G over D.
So on the guitar you just play the [Gb] one chord [F] without the bass.
So the [Bb] bass is holding down the D while you're playing the G.
And it makes this real emotional chord.
It's like, wow.
What is that?
Yeah.
Love's so [F]
amazing.
And then back to that G over D, the D and the bass.
Love's [Eb] so amazing.
[Bb] [Cm] And so that just kind of comes out of nowhere.
It just really turns it into the chorus in a fast way.
And then the bridge is simple.
Walk up from the A minor.
[Bb] All our hope is in you.
And something we do on the recording that [Ab] if you have some singers with you,
if you're leading worship and you have several people behind you who can sing,
is the chorus and the bridge work together.
Oh, cool.
And so you can [B] sing them at the same time.
So when you get back at the end, you go back to the chorus really big. Jesus, Messiah.
Your kind of choir can start singing.
All our hope is in you.
Oh, that's nice.
Name of the Lord.
All our hope is in you.
Right.
Together.
And it really makes it.
It can build it.
Yeah.
Amazing thing.
Right.
I can see coming out of one of those intense moments in worship and back up to intensity.
It just kind of adds another thing.
Sweet.
Thank you very much.
Jesus, Messiah.
Yep.
Jesus, Messiah.
Amen.
