[N] This is [G] the guitar lesson for Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth from [N] GuitarMadeEasy.com.
I want to give a shout out to AmphibianMan94 and his video right here, which he does a
great job of showing you how to put the verse.
He just doesn't [G] cover the chorus, which I will cover both the verse and the chorus [E] in this lesson.
First things first, make sure your guitar is in standard E tuning.
All right, and the intro [Em] and verse goes like this.
[A] [Em]
[A] [E]
All right?
[G] So that's over and over and over again, all right?
[Dm] Little refresher on [Em] harmonics.
The two harmonics that we're going to play are the 12th fret harmonic on the E string
and on the 7th fret on the E string.
Hear it?
So [G] you can get that one to ring for a second, but there it is, okay?
So those two [N] harmonics.
How you do a harmonic is you put your finger on the [Em] string and kind of mute it, and then
as you pluck, you take your finger off.
So you pluck maybe a microsecond before you take your finger off.
So pluck first and then soon follow with taking your finger off the strings, and you get a
harmonic tone, okay?
All right?
So that's how harmonics [C] work.
Now for the rhythm of the verse, it goes like [E] this.
It goes, [Em] [A] [E]
the only [N] finger I have on the strings is going to be my pointer finger on the 2nd
fret D string, okay?
[G] The E and the A are open, and I [E] go E, [Em] mute, D, [A] mute A, [E] mute D, mute E, mute D, [A] mute A,
[E] mute E, D.
Okay?
So if [A] [E]
[A] [Em] the harmonic's intimidating you, you can even play the song just like that, okay?
Make sure to play it slow to get the feeling of the song, [E] because if you play it too fast,
[A] [E]
it's kind [C#] of like a jazzier feel.
You [E] want to go really slow.
You want to go
[A] [E]
[G] And when I mute, after every note I pluck, I'm coming down and I'm basically using this part of
I'm using kind of like this part of my fingers, and it's slapping the strings.
Practice doing [C] that.
[E] All right, so pluck, mute, pluck, mute, until you get a good sound, okay?
[A] [E]
[A] [Em] [G] All right?
So that's that part right there.
Now let's incorporate those harmonics, okay?
So the harmonics [Em] go
[A] [E]
[B] [Em]
All right?
All right, so [N] when we first
The best way to set yourself up for success while playing this song is to first pluck
this harmonic at the very beginning of the song.
This is what starts your playing, okay?
So [G] you go
And [E] then mute, and then pluck that second fret on the D string, [A] and mute, and then you
pluck the A string open.
[G] So let's see here.
[E] [A]
And then I go right into [C] that [B] harmonic on the seventh fret.
I'll play it very slow so you can see what I'm talking about [Em] here, okay?
[A] [E]
[A] [E]
[A] [E] [Em]
So All right?
[Am] That's the verse.
[B] Now, when we go from the verse to the chorus, [E] this is how it goes.
It goes
[A] [E]
So right into E, okay?
So we pluck the E, and then we go into strumming E with our fingers, remember?
And it goes
E, [D] E, D, D, [A] D, A, [C] A, and the C, C, C.
[E] So E, [D] C, [A] [C] A, C.
All right?
And this is the strumming [E] pattern right here.
So I go
E, [D] E, D, D.
[E]
So down, [D] down, down, up, down, [A] down, down, up, down, down, down, down, [C] up, down, down,
down, down, up.
Or you can go on the C.
Down, down, down.
Down, down, down, down.
All [E] right?
So, [D] [A]
[C] [Em] back [E] to
[A] [E] [G] And before the next verse comes, I usually don't throw the harmonics right into it, okay?
When the verse comes along and the vocals come in, that's when I throw the [E] harmonics in.
So, [A] [E] there's a little break.
[A] [Em]
[B] [E] [B] All right?
So you get the [N] idea.
That's the whole song right there.
The chorus is the easiest [E] part.
[D] The
[A] [C] [E]
Not bad.
You've learned the entire song.
[C] Congratulations.
