[Am] This is Gospel Music [E] Today.
We're at the [F] National Quartet [C] Convention in Louisville, [Dm] Kentucky,
and we [B] are [Am] talking to Carol Woodard of the McKameys.
Carol, welcome to Gospel Music Today.
Thank you.
Thank you for having me.
I want you to tell me about the beginning of the [G] McKameys, back with the [E] trio of sisters.
[N] Oh, my.
Let me see if I can remember back that far.
We started with my [G] older sister, Dora.
[C] She traveled [A] a lot with Dad.
[C] Our dad was a preacher, and he did a lot of revivals.
She started out singing with him, going with him in revivals and singing.
Then [Am] at her home [C] church, one Saturday night, [D] she told me and [G] Peg,
she said, [Am] I have to sing at my church tomorrow, and you and Carol are going to help me.
You're going to sing this [C] part, and you're going to sing this part, and we're going [Am] to sing.
We're going to sing this song.
From [E] that, it just [Am] started.
[N] We did the trio.
That was 1954, [C] I think.
Then in 59, Peg met and married Reuben.
[N] We had been singing a cappella, and Reuben played the guitar for [E] his family.
He was the Bean family.
He started [F#] playing for us.
[Em] Him and Peg kind of dated to and from [F#] churches [E] where we would sing.
He started playing with us, and [Am] of course, it led to marriage.
[F#] That's how [Em] we got started.
We just [E] started singing [Am] revivals.
Then we would go to [Em] revivals where pastors would come from Florida and [Am] Georgia and North Carolina.
[E] Our [F] ministry just kind of spread [E] out.
The pastors would ask us to come to their church.
[Dm] [Em] We did that for a lot [Am] of years.
[C] At what point did the McKameys become a full-time [D] traveling ministry?
In 1980, [Cm] we quit our [A] jobs and went out on faith [E] and [G] started full-time, [A] 1980.
[E] [D] With all the traveling that the McKameys do, I [Am] know that you're still [E] very involved in your [G] local [A] home church.
[C] Yes.
Connie is our music director at our church.
[G] My husband is the chairman of the deacon board, [Am] and Reuben is [G] a trustee.
Peg sings in [A] the choir, teaches [C] Sunday school.
[E] We just do [D] whatever [Am] we need to do when we're at church.
[D] We try to plan it where we can be back to our home church.
We go to church on Wednesday night [A] [C] and most of the time leave after church on Wednesday [Am] night.
Then we're usually back in [G] our home church on Sunday morning for [D] Sunday school.
That's [Am] amazing because I understand [G] the miles and the hours out on the roads.
That's very impressive.
Yes.
[D] We love our church.
[G] [Am] If we can't get fed, [G] then we can't go out and expect [Am] to feed other people [D] with a ministry.
[Em]
Without that, [Am] if you [D] don't attend your home church [E] and [C]
get some [A] portion of the Word,
then you [G]
can't try to help other people.
That's where we get our strength [D] [Am] from our church and our church family and our pastor.
[G] Then we, therefore, can go out and [D] minister to other people.
[A] That's what it's all about.
It's a ministry.
[E]
[C] Tell me about the McKamey's current [G] CD.
[Dm] Our current CD is [G] entitled Something [A] More.
Our single from that is I've Made Up My Mind.
[Em]
[G] These days and times, [A] we need to [E] either go [Dm] or quit.
[G]
We can't straddle the line.
We have to make up our mind if [A] we want to be a Christian or if we [E] don't want to be a Christian [C] and go with it.
[G] We don't want to change.
We [Am] won't look to the left or look to the right.
[C] We want to stay focused on Him [G] and what He's got for us to [Dm] do.
So I've made up [A] my mind.
I'm going to follow Christ [Em]
and walk in His ways.
[A]
When [E] the [Am] McKamey's get back [Em] on the bus, you go to a town, go to a church, you get [N] back on the bus,
what do you want the people to remember [F#] after you get back [Cm] on the road?
[Dm] I want them to remember that we [D#] portrayed [E] Christ.
The Bible says if He'd be [C] lifted up, you'll draw men unto [G] Him.
That's what we want to do.
We want to put Him first [Dm] and foremost.
We [G] want to tell somebody that there is a better [Gm] way.
You don't have to live like this.
You [C] can come to Christ.
[Em]
[D] If we do our job [Cm] right, then [G] the Lord will be pleased with that and He will [N] act accordingly.
Carol, thank you very much for talking to us on Gospel Music Today.
Thank you for [C] having me.
