[Bm] This is the guitar lesson for [Db] Coldplay's The Scientist, the easy way and the correct way.
Alright, [G] make sure your guitar is perfectly tuned in standard [E] E tuning.
Okay, and then we're going to [G] take our capo, put it on the third fret.
If you don't have a capo, click on the [Bb] link.
And let's go into the [Bm] song.
Alright, the song is predominantly on piano, but [A] the guitar comes in probably about,
you know, the second verse and then goes throughout the rest of the song, okay?
There's the verse, there's the pre-chorus, there's the chorus and the outro [Bb] that I'm
going to teach you.
And [G] all of these parts are in the song, okay?
So starting off with the verse, okay?
So capo on the third fret, you want to make a B minor 7, which is pointer finger on the
second fret A string, [Bm] middle finger on the second fret G string, ring finger on [Gm] the second
fret E [Dm] string, okay?
First chord, alright?
Then a [Bb] G, alright, [F] then a D, [C] and then a Dsus2, so you just take your middle finger off.
[Dm] Alright, it should sound like this.
[Bb]
[F]
Alright, the [Ab] strumming pattern is basically [G] just down strums, okay?
I emphasize every other down strum.
Watch very closely.
[Dm] [Bb]
Alright?
And [G] the other thing I'm doing in between chord changes, I do down up.
Okay, so watch very [Dm] closely, you can see the down ups.
[Bb] [F]
[C] [G] That's the strumming pattern for the entire song, alright?
But the chord progression changes up a little bit.
Okay, getting into the pre [Gb]-chorus, the nobody said it was easy, we go to [Bb] G.
Nobody said it was easy.
[F] D.
Dsus2.
[Bb] Nobody said it was easy.
[C]
Alright, so on that pre-chorus [Bb] it's G, [F] D, Dsus2, D, D, Dsus2.
You go through that twice, and then you go to [C] A, and you finish on A7, so you just take
your middle finger off that second fret G string.
[C] I'm going back to the start.
And [G] when he says start, that's when the chorus comes in, okay?
The chorus is just playing through the guitar, really.
There's no singing over that chorus, so that's what we'll call the chorus, okay?
[Em] So the chorus goes [F] D, [Bb] G, [F] D, Dsus2.
The [G] second time through the chorus, it's Bm7, G, [Bb]
D, Dsus2.
Okay, so D, [N] G, D, D, Bm7, G, [A] D, D, okay?
So [Ab] that's towards the end of the song, that's [G] actually when the electric guitar comes in.
And that part right there I want to go over for you, and you're going to need a buddy
to play along with that, okay?
So there's no [Bm] capo, and the reason why I say buddy is because, yeah, there's no capo on
the [G] guitar that plays the electric guitar part, okay?
What they're doing in that part [B] is the chord progression [G] is basically [Gm] Bm7, which is played
up [Dm] here, okay?
So it's, alright, the same thing.
[A] And then you go down to Bb right here, which is on the first and third fret.
[Bb] And then you go to F.
[G] And this is where it's a little bit different, okay?
You do an [F] F bar chord.
[E] You can hear it in the song, it goes, bom [N] bom da da, bom bom da da bom.
And what I'm doing is I'm doing [F] this F, and then after two [Fm] down strums, I put my pinky
on [G] the third fret G string, okay?
[F] And it gives me that sound, and [F] then I take it off.
So listen very closely.
[D] Okay, you can kind of hear it.
[Dm] So Bm7, [Bb] Bb, and then you [F] have your F.
[Gb] Alright, [A] and let's go back to the outro of the song.
And so if, let's say you don't have a buddy to play that guitar part when the heavy electric
guitar comes in.
The song ends up, and the lead singer, I forget his name, he's going, ahhhh, and all [Gm] that
is, is Bm7, [Dm] [Bb] B, [F] B,
[Dm] [Bb] ahhhh.
[F]
[C] Alright and that's it.
That's the outro of the song, and the song [Bm] finishes right after that.
