Chords for How To Play Yellow By Coldplay On Guitar

lovely instrument that we call the guitar, or that I call the guitar.
I'm
super pumped.
I've got some new hair happening here.
I had a three-year-old do
it this morning.
I'm feeling pretty good.
I'm feeling like she might have done a
better job than I do.
So I think she's gonna be my stylist.
And we're gonna
learn some Coldplay today.
Let's go old-school Coldplay to their first
single, Yellow.
Capo on the second fret.
What we love about Coldplay is
Coldplay songs are very [B] pretty and very easy, and we love easy songs.
So let's get
it started.
_ Start with an A major chord.
You can play A like this, and you can play A like this.
I'm gonna play A like this. _
_ _ _ This is your intro. _ _
Now we're [E] gonna go to A sus 4,
which [B] is really nice because you're only moving one [Em] finger up a fret, [B] your pinky.
Or if you're doing this, you can [E] move your third [B] finger, or you can add your
[E] pinky.
So lots of different ways to [B] play this.
I like to just do that.
_ One, two,
three, four.
One, two.
[Em] A sus 4.
[B] Do that again.
Two, three, four.
One, [Em] two, three, [B] four.
Now we're
into the groove of the song.
A for two bars.
One, two, three, [F#] four.
E major.
_ _ _ _ _ Now we're gonna go [E] to a D sus 2.
If you're not familiar with a D sus 2, it's just your D major shape, but
then take off your middle finger so you get this open string here.
Really nice.
For two bars.
_ _ And that's your verse [B] also.
_ _ Oh, don't get mad at me for messing up the lyrics.
[F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] D sus 2.
_ _ It was all [B] yellow.
Back to A. _ _ _ _ _
_ [F#] E _ _ major. _
_ _ [E] _ D sus 2. _ _
_ _ So you do that [B] three times, and then you go back to your A.
[E] A [B] sus 4.
A. _
_ So basically it's two parts.
A, A sus 4, A.
And then [F#] A, [E] E, D sus 2.
That's why we love Coldplay.
Let's go into the chorus.
So now we're gonna play a full D.
Not your D sus 2, but put your middle finger down on the first string, second fret.
_ _ _ _ _ Now we're gonna go to an F [G#m] sharp minor, which is a bar chord, which is, it's gonna be a little challenging if you're just new to this
instrument.
So there's a couple things we can do.
You can do the full bar chord.
It's taken out of the E minor shape.
You see that?
There's your E minor.
And then you [F#] bar.
_ [G#m] Or, if you're not ready to do the full bar chord, we can do this little one here where you're just barring these three strings.
But you still have these on the fifth string and the fourth string.
Or, if you're not ready for that, you can do just these three.
Make it even easier. _
But one, two, three.
But you have to make sure that you're only getting these three strings when you're strumming.
I'm gonna do the full bar chord, but again, you've [F#] got this, [G#m] this, _ this, or this to choose from with the F sharp [B] minor.
_ [E] So D, _ _
_ [G#m] F sharp [F#] minor, E. _ _
[E] _ _ D, [G#m] F sharp [F#] minor, E.
You do [E] that three times.
_ _ [G#m] _ _ [F#] _
[E] Play myself.
Back to the D sus 2. _ _
And _ [B] then we're back into the verse, which we already know and have already [F#] done.
A, [E] E, D sus 2.
So that's it.
That keeps repeating itself.
You've got that intro, you've got the verse, and then you've got the chorus.
And then the last thing is just the outro, which is pretty much the same.
It's only one [B] variation.
So you're gonna do A.
This is at the very end of the song. _
_ [F#] E.
_ _ Same as the verse.
_ [E] D sus 2. _ _ _
Repeat that.
[B] A. _ _ _ _
Throw [F#] that in there if you'd like. _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _
Okay, [B] here's the end.

Now instead of going to E, go [F#m] to E minor. _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ I know I'm screwing up the lyrics.
Go easy on me with this.
All Coldplay lyrics get jumbled in my head.
All I can think of is chords.
Chords and melody.
That's all I got.
[B] So again, the outro.
Same throughout, just [F#] like the verse.
A, [E] E, D sus 2.
But at the [F#] very end when [B] he starts singing, go to A. _ _ _
_ _ [F#m] E minor, which is a really nice touch.
_ _ [Em] Now end on D sus 2.
_ And that's it for that one.
Really work on the F sharp minor, because that's gonna be the most challenging part of the song.
But you're gonna get [B] these little tricks like this A to A [E] sus 4 or D to D sus [B] 2.
That's really nice to throw into any [E] song, really.
[B] Just to make it a little more flavorful, so you're not just doing the same thing.
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
It just adds a little bit of spice, and we like a little bit of spice.
So [G#m] just definitely get that F sharp minor.
And the faster you get the bar chords, the easier it'll be in the long run.
Because I tried to skip bar chords for a very, very long time, and it wasn't worth it.
So just get them over with, [G#] because once you got them, you got them.
So get [G#m] this F sharp minor.
I promise, it's [G] worth the pain.
