[G] [D] [A]
[G] [E] This is the guitar lesson for Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Southern Cross, the easy way and
the correct way.
Starting off, make sure your guitar is in standard E tuning.
[Em] Okay, and let's talk about the intro of the song, okay?
So we have two down strums [A] on A, [G] mute it.
Two down strums on G.
[G#m] Alright, and then [Em] we have this little thing which I [B] haven't seen any other lesson really talk about.
Okay, but it's in there, believe me, it's in there.
So you make a D, [A#] and that's the next chord you're going to [G] go to, but you're going to [D] do this.
[G] Alright, so what I did was I put my thumb on the third fret E string, [D] one down strum
on that, and I kind of hit a couple of these [G] strings right afterwards.
Let's say I probably went through the D string right there, so I went.
[D] [A] [G] Alright, so I put my thumb on [D] the third fret, down strum once, but I don't hit any of this
right here, [G] okay?
I'm only hitting this right here.
So [F#] down, [D] down, I move my thumb to the second fret, do the same thing, then take it off,
do it open, and then I strum through D.
So this is what it should [A] sound like.
[G]
[D] [A] [G]
[D] [A] Alright, that second time through we end up on A.
[C#] Okay, so the first time, well [A] I'll show
you one more time.
[G]
[D] [A] [G]
[D] [A] A lot of lessons just tell you to go back to D and just keep on going back to D, [G] okay,
or a lot of tabs out there.
So [Fm] then we go [G] into the verse, the song, got out of town on a boat, going to Southern Islands,
okay?
So [A] that's, [G] you just kind of strum through the same chord progression I just [A] showed you.
[G]
[D] Still have that, it's still in [A] there, alright, then [G] all over again.
[D] This [A] time, number A, we go to A instead of D, alright?
[C#] So it alternates, first time [G] through is D, the second time through it ends on A, okay?
But you [D] still want to have your, in there, okay, [A] the little, alright, keep that in [N] there,
that's throughout the entire song, alright?
So where it changes up a little bit is the line where it says, we got 80 feet of a water
line, nicely [Em] making [A] way, it goes, we got 80 [G] feet of a water line.
[Em] [A] [G] Alright, so it goes D, D [A] minor, A, alright?
So [Bm] it goes D, [A] D minor, A, to show you really slow, okay?
And then [B] right back into what we usually know, [C] or what we [A] regularly know.
[G] [D] [A] [C#] Let's see, so back into the verse, I kind of got mixed up there, I was thinking of the
intro, but remember the verse we strum [N] through, the intro is where we [A] mute it, okay, we go.
[G] That's the intro and that's where it goes back into [B] the song after the verse and chorus and everything.
[G] So for the verse, remember we're just [A] strumming through, we're going, [G] [D] [A]
[G] [D] [A] [N] alright, so after that
line, but on a midnight watch I realized twice you ran away, alright, [A] so it goes, but on
a [G] midnight watch I realized twice [A] you ran away, then I do a bunch of A [G] down [A] strokes,
on A, [G] think about [D] how many [G] times I [A] have [G] fallen, alright, so that part it's G, D, G, A, and
you got to be careful, the A kind of sneaks up on you, so you got to transition to it fast, okay?
So let's do that over again.
[A]
[G] Think about G, [D] D, [G] G, [A] E, [G] there it is, [D] G, D, [G] G, [A] G, A, [G] G, [D] D, [G] [A] A.
[G] This is the part where he says forgotten, he stays on A and [A] keeps on just strumming A.
And I've [D] been around, [G] [A]
[D] [G] looking for that moment.
[A] [G] Alright, and that part, the chorus is D, G, [D] A, okay, so.
[G] [A]
[D] Looking [G] for that, [A]
[D] who [G] knows I don't [A] have to, and you know it [G] will.
[D]
[A] [G] [D] [A] Alright, [B] and see how I went back into that little intro [G] after I went through the chorus,
the verse, that first time through, so that's what you want to do, okay?
So just remember you strum through the verse, and you strum [N] through the chorus, and you
strum through the pre-chorus, and then when it comes to, when you come all the way back
to the beginning, you want to mute it, [A] so you go, [G] mute, you know, and do your thing.
Alright so the song continues on, you have a little solo in there, it's actually done
by a guitar and I think some other effect, it's either a guitar with a bunch of various
effects and then another regular [N] guitar playing, or it's something weird in there, maybe like
a synthesizer or something like that.
So after the solo and everything, you go back, you repeat the chorus, and it goes into a
verse, and then the song actually [G] ends on this, okay?
It goes, [D] so it ends on the [G] D instead of [A] going, [B] alright most [C] people would think you end on
the A but you actually end [N] on the D.
So that's it with all those parts, you can kind of piece them together and, you know,
figure [Bm] out, if you listen to the original recording, figure out where they all go and
master the song.
