Welcome to Vanderbilt.com today.
This is going to be a really quick lesson on the
opening solo to
Woodstock by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
This is a request got yesterday
This is in a G minor pentatonic and what
the main thing that Stills is doing on this is
It's in standard tuning, but he's using this
This G a lot
To refer to so he'll be going back and forth to it a lot
[F#]
[D] I'm playing this through a Les Paul standard and a
Vox AC30 and the only effects I have on here are a little bit of chorus and a compressor
So let's get started
Okay, so it goes like this
[F#m]
[D#] You
[A#] Okay, so I'm going to walk you through this slowly
As I said the whole thing is in the first position of the G minor pentatonic
And you're going to [C#] start
You're going to start down on the third fret
On the fourth string
And you've got a hammer on
from the three to the five
And you go immediately [F#] to the the bass G so it's
And then you return to
You return to this G.
This is again the the fourth string fifth fret
[F#m]
Then you've got a [Bm] bend on the [A#m] third string [D#] third fret
And
This is a pretty dirty sounding song so if you pick up the the second string third fret that's fine
You know you can either do
[A#]
Sound a little [F#m] bit better with them
so
so far we've got
And then you come back and do
[F#]
You
You get that same figure that you started with so again
[F#]
And you hit the the G again
[F#m] You
[F#] [D]
Third fret six string and
Fifth fret
[F#m]
And then you're gonna you're gonna bend the heck out of this
Out of this third string fifth fret it's almost a [A#] kind of a Neil Young thing
[B] [C]
[F#m]
and if you get a little bit of a
Pinch harmonics going on that [D] that's okay, okay?
[F#m] Then it's
Third string I'm sorry fourth string fifth fret to third string third fret
[D#] bend the third string fifth fret and
[F#m]
[F#] So you're just getting those two
The first [F#m] and second string on the third fret
[A#m] And then you got [G#] a hammer on you got to use I use my pinky you could use
You could use your ring finger if you want and it's
Second string third fret to second string sixth fret
[F#m]
[A#m] [A#]
So once you've hit that then you you have a series of
Two string
Two string chords if you will you can bend them the first one is
[F#m] [Cm] [F#m]
[B]
[F#m] [F#]
[D#]
And then the second time you you play it you play
[F#m]
So the whole thing there is
[A#] And then you're you're you're gonna hit the
second string fifth fret
[D#m] Down to the [Gm] second string third fret
[C#]
[F#] Second string [A#] sixth fret
And [F#] then [G#]
[C#] [C#]
[F#m] [C#]
you're gonna do a [D#] little bend on the actually on the second string
Fourth fret just a little one.
It's a little little little half bend
[F#m] [A] [F#] the
the third string
Third fret [F#m]
that's pretty much it.
Hope you can pick it up from there.
I'll build some too fast.
Take care
